The United City-States of Ends (UCSE) is the main setting: Apple City, familiar from the government essays, is one of its cities. To the north is the Nation Union of Telos (NUT); to the west, the Democratic Republic of Purposes (DRP). None is a stand-in for a particular country. None gets a moral verdict from its name: each action has to be examined on its own.
