入门

The essays on this site use a vocabulary of their own: chisel, construct, remainder, cultivation, colonization, 13DD. The words are not there to impress anyone. They are there to say some things that are otherwise hard to say. This page walks through them in a few minutes, so that you can open any essay afterwards and not get stuck on a word.

The three-sentence version

Every judgment you make about the world is what was left after a cut.

The cut is never clean; something always goes unhandled — and that leftover is where the next step points.

The same holds for people: there is always something in another person you cannot hold down, which is why you cannot use them purely as a means.

1. Start by Recognizing a Chair

There is a chair in front of you. You recognize it as a chair.

Doing that performed an action: you cut it out from everything else. It is not a table, not a bed, not a step. That cut is the chisel — chiseling is negation, saying "this is not that."

After the cut something is left behind: the category "chair." What is left behind is the construct.

A construct is not a truth. It is sediment — the trace the cut left when it passed through. Everything this site calls a construct means this: a concept, a rule, a theory, an institution, a person's understanding of themselves. All traces left by some act of negation.

And then the trouble starts. Is a tree stump a chair? A beanbag? A stone step you sat on all afternoon?

Those uncut edges are the remainder.

2. The Remainder Is Not a Mistake

This is the most important sentence in the whole framework, and the one most often read backwards.

The remainder is not you failing to think it through. Polish the definition of "chair" as finely as you like and something will still spill over the edge — because cutting cleanly is not a thing that can be done. Incompleteness is not this cut's error; it is the nature of every cut.

So the remainder cannot be eliminated, only moved. Refine the definition and the old remainder goes; a new one surfaces somewhere else.

Which also means: the remainder has a direction. It points at where the next cut should fall. The reason you reconsider what a chair is at all is precisely that the tree stump was never settled.

Incompleteness is not a defect. It is the condition of going on. That sentence gets applied all over this site — to a theory, a person, a relationship, a country.

3. The Chisel-Construct Cycle

String those steps together and you have this site's central machine:

Chisel (make a cut) → construct (a trace is left) → remainder (what the cut missed) → chisel again at the remainder → a new construct → a new remainder → …

It does not stop. Because the remainder cannot be eliminated, there is always somewhere for a next cut to land.

One detail is worth care: the remainder supplies a landing for the next cut, but does not guarantee the cut happens. Having a remainder is not the same as someone going and chiseling it. Being able to cut and actually cutting are two things. That step in between — the cut that actually falls — is called the bridge. A bridge can only be experienced, not copied: someone can take your construct wholesale, but not the moment you saw it.

Does the cycle ever meet something it cannot cut? Yes. That uncuttable thing is the thing-in-itself. It differs from the remainder: the remainder is what has not been handled yet; the thing-in-itself is what structurally cannot be. And it has no fixed location — approach from different directions and you hit it in different places.

4. Why Everything Is Phrased as "Cannot Not"

Conclusions on this site are rarely written as "you should." Almost all of them are written as "you cannot not."

That is not stylistic awkwardness. It is deliberate.

"You should be honest" is a rule. A rule needs someone to lay it down, and you can ask by what authority. "You cannot not be honest" says something else: try building a set of rules that permits lying universally and you will find it collapses on its own — for a lie to work, someone has to believe it; if everyone lies, no one believes; if no one believes, the lie no longer works.

So "cannot not" is not a command but an observation: the schemes that try to get around it dissolve by themselves. This double-negative form is what the essays call the categorical imperative.

5. The Person Is an End

The phrase is Kant's. This site uses it, and the usage needs stating clearly.

People usually hear "a person is an end, not a means" as a moral slogan. Here it is not. Here it is a structural claim.

There is always remainder in a person — their own direction, the part of them you do not know, the place you cannot hold down. They keep growing on their own. This does not depend on whether you approve.

So you cannot actually use them purely as a tool. You think you are handling an instrument; in fact you are dealing with something that moves by itself, and whatever you press down surfaces somewhere else. "The person is an end" is a factual judgment first and an ethical conclusion second.

A remainder is not yet a subject. Stones, software, and institutions also exceed our descriptions. SAE's theory of subjecthood asks when a remainder is entered on a subject's own account — when that subject acquires authorship over whether and how to continue, refuse, or revise. This primer gives the conclusion; the short bridge explains the missing step.

In passing: the name of this framework, Self-as-an-End, says exactly this. The name is never translated, in any language, anywhere on this site.

6. Cultivation and Colonization

These two words appear more than two thousand times across the site and are worth memorizing on their own. They name the two directions your intervention in another can take.

Cultivation: your intervention widens the other's space of possibility.

Colonization: your intervention narrows it.

Teaching a child to tie their shoes is cultivation — once they can, they can, and they can take the technique to other knots. Tying the laces for them forever is colonization — they never learn, and you get to feel you gave a great deal.

Note that colonization is often not malicious. It is usually well meant. That is what makes it hard to spot. The criterion ignores motive and looks at the result: did the other's possibilities increase or decrease?

The word has a more technical use in the essays too: one thing occupying a position it cannot reach. A conditional judgment impersonating unconditional truth; one particular theory impersonating the only framework; a layer of phenomena forced back down into a lower-level mechanism for its explanation. All of it is colonization, and what these share is a construct holding a place it cannot hold.

7. What 13DD–16DD Mean

The essays are full of numbers like 13DD and 16DD. They are not a code. They are floor numbers.

SAE arranges the world in a sequence from simplest to most complex and numbers each level: 0D is hundun (prior to all structure), 1DD the law of identity, and so on upward. The four levels most often used in the essays are:

  • 13DDthe self-subject — not merely a process running, but “I” running it; a remainder can now be registered as mine.
  • 14DDthe subject as its own end — the self forms a direction and a cannot-not of its own.
  • 15DDthe self-legislating subject — relationally, it can recognize the other as an end without waiting to be recognized in return: unilateral non dubito.
  • 16DDmutual non dubito — two subjects recognize one another as ends.

You do not need to memorize any of it. Two things are enough:

First, higher numbers depend on lower ones. Life depends on physics, cognition on life, ethics on cognition.

Second, no layer can explain its own foundation. Mathematics cannot prove the law of identity; physics cannot explain why mathematics works. Reach the foundation and you have to go up a layer for tools. That move is used constantly in the essays.

One more word you will meet: non dubito, Latin for "I do not doubt," which is also the name of this site. It means not wavering on one structural point: a subject is an end, not merely a means. It does not make anyone infallible or immune to criticism. You may challenge a person's claims and actions without canceling that person's standing as a subject. At 15DD this recognition runs one way; at 16DD it is mutual.

8. If You Want to Understand SAE

You do not need to begin with an academic paper. These five readings form the shortest deliberate route from the vocabulary to the framework in use:

  1. Start Here — learn chisel, construct, remainder, and cannot-not. You are reading it now.
  2. When a Remainder Becomes Mine — why exceeding a description is not enough, and what changes when a remainder belongs to a subject.
  3. Freedom as a Cannot-Not — how a subject becomes its own end by carrying a direction of its own.
  4. When Two Ends Meet — what recognition requires when neither subject can absorb the other.
  5. AI Can Talk to You All Night. It Cannot End Loneliness. — see the distinction between response and recognition do actual work.

After these five, continue through SAE Foundations for the full reader-facing path, or go to self-as-an-end.net for the formal arguments.

9. Or Browse by Curiosity

There is no required order. Pick whatever you were already curious about:

The Famous People series — the framework applied to more than a hundred historical figures: Socrates, Wang Yangming, Nietzsche, Beethoven. The fastest way in if you want to see the framework land on actual people.

The Daodejing, reread — all eighty-one chapters, in six languages. If the text is already familiar to you, this is where the difference between the old and the new reading shows most clearly.

The Methodological Overview — the manual for the whole machine. Start here if you want the full derivation. This one is dense.

The Library — 169 series and more than 1,358 essays, grouped by theme. Come here when you want to browse.

A last note: this page is a construct too, so it has remainder. To be clear, it dropped a great many qualifications. When you read the essays you will find things more complicated than what is said here — that is not an error on this page. That is the remainder doing its work.

Glossary

Chisel
Negation. The act of saying "this is not that."
Construct
The sediment negation leaves. A concept, a rule, a theory, an institution, a person's understanding of themselves. Not truth — trace.
Remainder
What the cut did not get. It cannot be eliminated, only moved. It points to the next direction.
Remainder persistence
The account never zeroes out. No construct is complete. (Earlier essays call this remainder conservation.)
Chisel-construct cycle
Chisel → construct → remainder → chisel again. It does not terminate.
Bridge
The cut that actually falls at the remainder. The remainder supplies the landing, not the happening. A bridge can be experienced, not copied.
Thing-in-itself
What cannot be cut. Not "not yet known" but "structurally unreachable." It has no fixed location.
Cannot not / categorical imperative
A conclusion in double-negative form. Not "you should," but "any scheme that tries to avoid this dissolves on its own."
The person is an end / Self-as-an-End
A subject carries remainder you cannot hold down and grows on their own, so they cannot be made purely into a means. A fact first, an ethics second.
Cultivation
Your intervention widens the other's space of possibility.
Colonization
Your intervention narrows it; or a construct occupying a position it cannot reach. Usually well meant.
DD / the dimensional sequence
Floor numbers from simple to complex. 13DD is the self-subject, 14DD the subject as its own end, 15DD the self-legislating subject and unilateral non dubito, 16DD mutual non dubito. No layer explains its own foundation.
Non dubito
Not certainty about the world or personal infallibility, but not wavering on the standing of a subject as an end. Unilateral at 15DD, mutual at 16DD. The name of this site.
Negativa
A deeper layer: negativity itself, prior to any being. Advanced material — safe to skip on a first read.
