Schneizel does not initially need Damocles to defeat Zero. He tells the Black Knights that their leader possesses a power of absolute command, provides evidence of its use, and links it to Euphemia's massacre.

The notorious betrayal scene is often judged as a test of gratitude. Read from inside the room, it is first a crisis of knowledge.

I. The question is not whether Zero is good

Once the officers believe Geass exists, Lelouch's intentions cannot settle the problem. A benevolent commander with the power to manufacture obedience creates the same verification crisis as a selfish one.

Each member must ask: when I agreed to follow Zero, can I establish that the agreement was mine? Memory does not help, because commanded subjects can experience the action as immediate and leave no accessible record of the intervention. Introspection does not help, because certainty itself could have been produced by a command.

Testimony from comrades fails for the same reason. Everyone who could reassure the group occupies the same uncertain position.

II. Geass reaches backward without changing the past

For Euphemia, Geass removes the effective power to say no in a particular moment. For everyone around an undisclosed Geass user, the discovery destabilizes the past. Earlier choices remain factually completed but lose secure authorship.

A person understands herself partly through decisions she remembers making: loyalties accepted, dangers entered, sacrifices judged worthwhile. If those decisions might belong to another will, identity becomes a record of actions without a reliable owner.

The Black Knights do not merely lose confidence in a commander. They lose confidence in the selves who trusted him.

III. Breaking obedience becomes the first requirement

The group needs to stop obeying before it can investigate anything else. It chooses the most drastic and hurried form of that break: hand Lelouch to Schneizel in exchange for Japan's independence.

The decision is not the only logically possible response. They might detain Lelouch, demand explanation, seek Jeremiah's anti-Geass ability, or separate command while preserving a trial. Schneizel controls the timing and evidence precisely to narrow that space.

Yet betrayal has a particular psychological function. An act directly opposed to Lelouch's survival is the act least likely to have been ordered by him. The officers seize on opposition as proof that at least this decision is theirs.

They try to recover agency by doing what the suspected author of their agency would never want. The impulse is intelligible even where the chosen procedure is reckless.

IV. The audience owns evidence the characters lack

Viewers know that Euphemia's massacre followed an accidental command at the moment Lelouch was ready to compromise. The Black Knights receive a recording in which he accepts responsibility and a political interpretation supplied by his enemy.

Our access to motive makes their judgment look obtuse. But even a complete account of the accident would not remove the structural fact: a voluntary army cannot ground its organization in trust while its leader secretly possesses a power that can manufacture trust.

The distinction between accident and plan matters for culpability. It does not restore verifiability.

V. Kallen asks for an answer

Kallen is the first person in the confrontation to stand between Lelouch and the firing line and insist that he be allowed to answer. She cannot prove that her loyalty is untouched by Geass. She does not pretend to possess evidence the others lack.

Her contribution is smaller and more precise: uncertainty has not yet completed the verdict. She asks Lelouch what she means to him and says she would stay if she could.

Lelouch closes that opening. To protect her from dying beside him, he claims that she and the Black Knights were merely pieces used for entertainment. Kallen says goodbye, but only after he supplies the answer that makes staying impossible.

Her moment is not unverified faith rewarded by the story. It is a demand that an accused relationship be allowed to speak before force fixes its meaning. Lelouch's protective lie becomes another instance of deciding for the person he intends to save.

VI. A bill that has been accruing since episode one

Lelouch plans individual uses of Geass with great care. He considers targets, wording, timing, and tactical aftermath. He rarely considers what merely knowing he has the power would do to people whose institutions depend on voluntary allegiance.

Geass is both a tool and an environment. Once its existence becomes credible, everyone near the user lives inside a permanent uncertainty about consent. Concealment delays that cost; it does not eliminate it.

The Black Knights' revolt is therefore not an arbitrary interruption of Lelouch's strategy. It is the social debt of absolute command arriving after two seasons. Lelouch's response is not to rebuild trust. He turns himself into the central material of a final plan.
