Reading Code Geass

Five essays on command, protection, political design, unverifiable consent, and the moral residue of a sacrifice that succeeds.

Code Geass makes domination exhilarating before it makes domination horrifying. A command that first looks like perfect revolutionary agency later exposes the one capacity without which action no longer belongs to an agent: the capacity to stop.

These essays follow that problem beyond supernatural power. Love can replace another person's judgment; political schemes can convert people into variables; even voluntary self-sacrifice can place permanent costs on someone who did not choose under complete conditions. The English edition is an independent rewriting of the Chinese arguments. Full spoilers for all fifty TV episodes follow.
