A Story Without Villains

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, edited for factual precision.

Code Geass offers three plans for world peace. None depends primarily on wealth, sadism, or the ordinary pleasures of tyranny. Their authors present themselves as solving injuries they understand with terrible clarity.

That is why the plans must be judged by their structure rather than by the cleanliness of the intention attached to them.

I. Charles abolishes the distance between minds

Charles and V.V. grow up in a murderous imperial court where every affection may conceal a plot. Their answer, developed with Marianne, is the Ragnarok Connection: destroy the “God” of collective human consciousness and end the separateness that permits masks and lies.

They describe this as a world without deception, even one in which Nunnally could live without fear. Their conduct toward their own children gives reason to distrust that self-description. Still, the childhood wound behind the project is real: hidden intentions made every relation unsafe.

The solution abolishes more than lies. It abolishes the other person as other. If consciousness is merged and every interior is exposed, conflict ends because the distance across which agreement, forgiveness, and betrayal occur has been removed.

Lelouch rejects the plan in the name of tomorrow. Privacy, masks, and even lies preserve an unexposed interior from which someone can become different. A perfectly transparent humanity would not only be peaceful; it would be fixed.

II. Schneizel abolishes effective refusal

Schneizel's Damocles plan is politically recognizable. Place F.L.E.I.J.A. weapons beyond retaliation, demonstrate a willingness to erase cities, and deter every war through permanent fear.

The proposal could work for a meaningful period. That is its force. Fear can restrain armies and rulers without requiring moral conversion. It can also make the inability to refuse the standing condition of political life.

Schneizel presents himself less as a desiring sovereign than as an optimizer. He can surrender titles and relocate authority if the equation still resolves. The absence of obvious appetite is not moral purity. Desire sometimes limits a ruler: someone who wants praise needs surviving people to offer it. A planner who treats even himself as replaceable may find fewer reasons not to treat everyone else the same way.

III. Lelouch abolishes one person

The Zero Requiem concentrates the world's hatred in Emperor Lelouch and destroys that object in public. Instead of merging minds or suspending cities beneath a weapon, it sacrifices the ruler who has made himself universally intolerable.

The plan will be examined in the final essay. Here its shape matters. Peace begins only after a person has been turned into a container for collective hatred, filled, and broken.

IV. Conversion precedes calculation

Charles converts persons into components of a common consciousness. Schneizel converts them into objects of deterrence. Lelouch converts himself into a vessel for hate. Once the conversion is accepted, each plan becomes strikingly coherent.

The decisive error therefore occurs before the strategic calculation. Persons cannot literally be merged, deterred, or disposed of as cleanly as the substitute units. A consciousness-fragment has no claim to private development. A deterrence-target has no independent purpose. A vessel has no future after use.

Political brilliance often begins by making the human material easier to calculate than human beings actually are.

V. Clean motives do not clean a design

Charles speaks from childhood betrayal. Marianne invokes a world safe for her daughter, though her willingness to abandon and manipulate her children complicates the claim. Schneizel exhibits little ordinary greed. Lelouch wants to protect Nunnally and end war.

None needs to be a cartoon villain for the design to violate persons. Indeed, the absence of a conveniently hateful motive forces better judgment. If criticism stops after locating selfishness, an impersonal or sacrificial planner will appear innocent.

The question must move from “What does the planner want?” to “What must people become for this plan to work?”

VI. Lelouch's contradiction

At the Sword of Akasha, Lelouch defends a world in which people can change. He preserves tomorrow against a project that would freeze humanity in complete knowledge. It is the clearest statement of the series' moral commitment.

He then turns toward the Zero Requiem, a plan that depends on converting people into fixed functions: hated emperor, immortal symbol, silent beneficiary, permanently loyal strategist. The contradiction does not make his defense of tomorrow insincere. It shows how quickly a principle defended against someone else's total plan can disappear inside one's own.

Before the Requiem, however, Schneizel defeats Lelouch once with something cheaper than Damocles. He tells the Black Knights that their leader can overwrite consent. The revelation does not simply give them a reason to distrust Lelouch. It destroys their ability to verify the history on which trust was built.
