SAE in Dialogue with Western Philosophy · Series Three

SAE and Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy

Six close readings place Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy beside SAE: the invented examiner, a correct answer that overclaims, Fortune’s defense, circular proof, conditional necessity, and cognition according to the knower’s power.

These essays do not use SAE to settle Boethius, or Boethius to authorize SAE. They begin from precise turns in the dialogue and let the two structures expose one another’s unresolved accounts.

Eight languages. The English, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and Korean essays are independent rewrites for their readers, not sentence-by-sentence translations.

Essay 01
The Questioner He Had to Invent

Boethius gives his hardest questions to Lady Philosophy. The dialogue shows how powerful self-critique can be—and why an invented interlocutor cannot certify her own independence.

Essay 02
The Answer That Became the Illness

Boethius correctly defines the human being as a rational mortal animal. His mistake begins when a true description signs its author's name and claims to be the whole self.

Essay 03
Let Fortune Make Her Own Case

Lady Philosophy gives Fortune a serious defense, complete with a burden of proof and a condition of defeat. SAE asks what happens when the winning side then occupies the opponent's ground.

Essay 04
Are You Playing with Me?

Boethius accuses Philosophy of proving one claim by another inside a closed circle. Her answer turns the alleged defect into the form of the object itself.

Essay 05
Necessity Is Not in the Walker

A person known to be walking must be walking, but knowledge does not force the step. Boethius and SAE meet in the practice of returning necessity to its proper address.

Essay 06
According to the Knower's Power

Boethius says that things are known according to the capacity of the knower. SAE follows him to that threshold, then refuses to let a higher faculty cancel an earlier act's remainder.

SAE and Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy
