The Man in the Shell Hole

Before the Name Arrives

Lost in no-man’s-land, Paul hides in a shell hole. A French soldier jumps in; Paul stabs him. The man does not die quickly. Through the day Paul gives him water from the muddy bottom, opens his shirt, and bandages three wounds he knows cannot be healed. He repeats the word “comrade” because it is the only one that might cross the language between them.

This is Paul’s first close killing. Bullets and grenades allowed death to occur through smoke and distance. In the hole, two bodies remain a few feet apart for hours.

Paul tells the dying man that before this moment he was an idea: rifle, bayonet, grenade, enemy. Now Paul sees a face, wife, and shared life. He promises to write to the family and provide for them.

Then he hesitates before opening the wallet. He understands that a name will nail the scene into him. Without it, time may wear the face away. He chooses to know. The papers say Gérard Duval, printer. Photographs show a woman and little girl. With Duval’s pencil, Paul copies the address and tells himself he must become a printer.

The order is irreversible. Knife first; profession, family, and name afterward. None of what makes Duval particular could be present when a figure suddenly dropped into the hole.

The Promise Without a Place to Stand

By afternoon Paul calms. The name ceases to torment him. Kat and Kropp later tell him it was necessary: if he had not struck, Duval would have. Their answer is not callousness but the grammar required to return Paul from the hole to his trench.

His promises need a place from which he could safely write, send money, and admit he killed a printer. The only available exit leads back to an army where such a confession has no durable role.

Earlier the men hear wounded horses screaming. Deterring tries to shoot them out of mercy and asks what the animals did to deserve war. Horses were never classified as enemies. French soldiers were, and the category arrived before any of the eighteen-year-olds met one.

The men understand the machinery. They joke that declarations of war should become ticketed contests in which ministers and generals fight in swimwear. Ordinary German and French workers have not offended one another. An order makes them enemies; another could make them friends.

Paul later looks at Russian prisoners and follows this thought to the point where he deliberately stops. Another step would remove the ground on which he must stand tomorrow.

He keeps Duval’s address in an envelope. The novel never mentions a letter or payment again. This does not prove the promise insincere. It shows how quickly the trench reorganizes a recognized person back into the abstraction necessary for survival.

The name came late enough to make the knife unbearable and not early enough to prevent it.
