He Did Not Know How It Would End

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, checked against the released film and its published screenplay.

At the end of 3 Idiots, the vanished student is revealed as Phunsukh Wangdu: a celebrated inventor with four hundred patents whose signature can determine Chatur’s largest contract. The joke is exquisite. The student who rejected the college’s measures has conquered the world those measures were meant to predict.

It is also the most dangerous moment in the film. If Rancho was right because he eventually became the biggest winner, then the story has not escaped the race. It has merely hidden the finishing line until the final scene.

I. The student whose degree belonged to someone else

“Rancho” began as Chhote, the orphaned son of a gardener on the wealthy Ranchhoddas family estate. He wore the young master’s discarded uniform, sat in class, completed homework, and even took examinations. The father noticed his ability and proposed a bargain: Chhote could attend ICE under the son’s name; the degree would belong to the real Ranchhoddas; afterward, Chhote would disappear and never contact anyone from college.

He therefore studies inside a contradiction. He has extraordinary access—to classrooms, equipment, teachers—and no recognized claim to its result. The institution will educate his mind while erasing its legal author.

This helps explain why a grade has so little command over him. The certificate was never going to be his. But it does not mean that nobody installed expectations in him, or that he moved without risk. His education depends on impersonation, secrecy, and a patron who can end it.

II. Freedom is not equally affordable

Rancho’s position differs sharply from those of his friends. Farhan needs a degree before he can refuse an engineering career his family financed. Raju needs the degree to enter the labor market on which several relatives depend. Rancho must excel enough to sustain the arrangement, but placement and ownership of the credential are not his future.

This asymmetry does not make his philosophy false. Learning from curiosity may be better than memorizing from fear regardless of income. It does mean that “do not chase success” costs different people different amounts. Advice becomes honest only after it acknowledges the risk the listener, rather than the speaker, will bear.

III. Rancho is not a moral mascot

The film’s exuberance invites us to forgive every transgression because Rancho is clever and kind. We should resist. He conceals his identity and later obeys the bargain by vanishing from his closest friends and Pia for ten years. He humiliates Chatur through an altered speech. He sends Farhan’s private letter without permission. He joins the theft of Raju’s examination paper.

Some of his interventions save lives; some create genuine possibilities; some are comic; some are plainly intrusive. The same impatience with authority that lets him reject a cruel rule can also make him treat another person’s consent as an obstacle.

To regard him as a person rather than a slogan is to judge acts separately. No patent obtained later can clean an earlier act retroactively.

IV. Chatur’s success is real

Ten years after the wager, Chatur returns as a corporate vice president. He has the house, swimming pool, Lamborghini, and salary with which he can rehearse his superiority. The film gives us no warrant to declare these achievements unreal or his life secretly miserable.

What remains captive is his measure of himself. He travels back on the exact date of an old bet, compares possessions, and needs Rancho’s defeat to complete his success. Even his pursuit of Wangdu is organized as a contract that will raise his standing.

Chatur proves that the institution’s method can work. He also shows how an externally comparative standard survives after graduation: enough is whatever places the self above somebody else.

V. The ending’s retrospective trap

The revelation of Wangdu establishes a meaningful connection between Rancho’s way of learning and his later work. Curiosity, understanding, practical invention, and indifference to exam rank plausibly contribute to four hundred patents and an unusual school. It would be perverse to say there is no causal relation at all.

But the ending also converts a moral argument into delayed market validation. Chatur must humble himself because the rebel possesses the commercial power he wants. Rancho has not merely lived well; he has won on a larger scoreboard.

To test the film’s deeper claim, remove that scoreboard. Imagine that Rancho becomes an unknown teacher with no patents, that Istvan’s job does not last, or that Raju’s candid interview ends in rejection. Would curiosity cease to be better than rote display? Would a self-authored life become an error?

Later success may show that Rancho’s philosophy was practically fruitful. It cannot be the ground on which every earlier choice was justified, because none of those choices was made with the ending available.

VI. Uncertainty neither condemns nor absolves

Rancho acts before outcomes are known. He helps finish Joy’s camera helicopter without knowing what it will find. He gives away the degree without knowing whether he will ever receive public standing. He posts Farhan’s letter without knowing the reply. He improvises a delivery during a storm. He steals the examination paper without knowing that Raju will refuse it.

The absence of certainty is not proof of courage in every case. A reckless or coercive act also lacks a guaranteed outcome. What matters is whether one has reasons that respect the people involved, assumes responsibility for foreseeable harm, and remains willing to repair what proves wrong.

That standard lets us admire the emergency invention without celebrating the theft, and recognize the letter’s good consequence without pretending the violation of consent never occurred.

VII. What “All is well” can honestly mean

Rancho learned the phrase from a night watchman who called “all is well” while the village slept. Only later did he discover that the watchman was blind. The call did not establish that danger was absent.

Rancho says the words do not solve a problem; they calm a frightened heart so that it can face the problem. This is smaller than a promise and more useful than one. It does not say that the exam will be passed, the father persuaded, the patient saved, or the inventor vindicated.

It says that action cannot wait for the retrospective certainty supplied by a final scene. A person must move while the future is still open, give reasons that can be owned now, and accept the duty to answer for what follows. Rancho did not know he would become Wangdu. That—not the four hundred patents—is where the film’s account of courage begins.

This essay reads Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 film 3 Idiots. The film credits Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone as a source; plot analysis here follows the film and its published screenplay.
