The Choices They Had to Own

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, checked against the released film and its published screenplay.

Rancho gives the same advice to both friends: do not let fear choose your life. Yet Farhan and Raju do not inhabit the same fear, and neither can simply imitate the freedom of the person giving the advice.

A friend may expose a false necessity, create a real alternative, or lend courage. The choice becomes one’s own only when the person who must live with its cost can answer for it.

I. A vocation assigned with love

Farhan’s father decided that his son would be an engineer almost as soon as he was born. The decision is comic because it precedes any knowledge of the child. It is also difficult to resist because it is made in the language of devotion.

The family has organized itself around Farhan’s future. His father rides a scooter rather than buying a car and installs the household’s only air conditioner in Farhan’s room so he can study. The career is not merely a command. It carries years of sacrifice, expectation, and pride.

This is how love can become debt. To reject engineering feels not only risky but ungrateful. Farhan does not lack a desire of his own: for years he has photographed animals and dreamed of working with the wildlife photographer André Istvan. What he lacks is permission to regard that desire as weighty enough to disappoint someone who has loved him.

II. Raju’s fear has evidence

Raju’s anxiety is not an abstract aversion to risk. His father, a former postmaster, is paralyzed. His mother, a retired schoolteacher, stretches a small pension across medicine and food. His sister’s marriage is trapped in dowry demands. A salaried engineering job would change the material conditions of the entire family.

Raju therefore wears rings, prays to several gods, and tries to eliminate uncertainty by gathering every possible protection. None works. The more desperately he needs the degree, the more every examination becomes a verdict on several lives, and the harder it becomes to act well.

The film does not ask us to pretend his fear is irrational. It shows a rational fear expanding until it takes authorship of the person who feels it.

III. Rancho opens doors—and crosses boundaries

Rancho recognizes what his friends cannot yet say. He notices that Farhan’s photographs are not a hobby around the edges of his “real” life; they reveal the work toward which the man is already oriented. He also sees that Raju’s deepest problem is not lack of talent but a life conducted as flight from catastrophe.

But Rancho is not a neutral Socratic questioner. He finds Farhan’s five-year-old letter to Istvan and secretly mails it. The reply creates a concrete alternative—a paid position photographing the Brazilian rainforest—but Rancho has opened it by overriding his friend’s consent.

Later, he and Farhan break into the Director’s office and take the examination paper specially prepared to fail Raju. Their motive is rescue; the act is still theft, and it tries to replace Raju’s judgment at the very moment they claim to restore his future.

Friendship can reveal an option that fear concealed. It can also become paternalism when one person decides that another’s good is too urgent to await his choice. The film is stronger when we allow both truths to remain.

IV. Farhan has to speak

The mailed letter does not settle Farhan’s life. Istvan’s offer is only a possibility. Farhan must still sit across from the father whose sacrifices are real and say that he deliberately skipped the campus interview because he does not want the profession chosen for him.

He does not promise that photography will make him rich. He accepts that he may earn less and asks his father not for confidence in a guaranteed outcome, but for permission to attempt a life he will not resent. The decisive sentence is spoken by Farhan, in Rancho’s absence, to the person whose disappointment he fears.

His father finally returns the expensive laptop meant for an engineer and tells him to buy a professional camera. This reconciliation is fortunate; many such conversations end otherwise. But even a refusal would not make Farhan’s choice less his own. Approval can soften the cost. It cannot be the source of authorship.

V. Raju refuses two bargains

After Virus threatens to expel him unless he betrays Rancho, Raju jumps from a third-floor window. Recovery does not remove his material need. It changes his relation to it. He discards the rings and enters a job interview without trying to conceal his injuries, low grades, or fear.

When the interviewers offer employment on condition that he change his newly candid attitude, he declines. He does not pray for the job; he says he would rather keep the attitude and lose it. They hire him, but that favorable result is not what gives the refusal its meaning. The act was already his when rejection remained possible.

His second refusal is even clearer. Rancho and Farhan present the stolen paper. Raju will not use it: if he passes, he will do so by his own ability; if he fails, then failure is acceptable. The friends created an illicit exit. By refusing it, Raju becomes answerable for the uncertain road that remains.

VI. No one can settle another person’s account

Rancho matters enormously. Without him, Farhan might never have treated photography as a life, and Raju might never have recognized fear as something distinct from duty. A friendship that never alters one’s field of possibility would be a poor friendship.

Yet to open a possibility is not to own the life that follows. Farhan must bear his father’s hurt, a smaller income, and the chance that talent will not become a career. Raju must bear the risk of unemployment and the consequences of refusing the paper. Rancho cannot absorb either cost on their behalf.

This is the boundary between emancipation and substitution. One says: there is a choice here that fear has hidden; I will stand beside you while you see it. The other says: I know your good, so I may choose through you. Rancho sometimes stands on each side of that line. His friends become free not by obeying him, but by turning an opened possibility into an answer they can give in their own names.

This essay reads Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 film 3 Idiots. The film credits Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone as a source; plot analysis here follows the film and its published screenplay.
