An Answer to Every Question

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

A bargain stated in simple terms

Kyubey offers adolescent girls a wish without an apparent limit. In exchange, each becomes a magical girl and fights witches. The wish is delivered. The fighting is real. Death is possible. At the level of a short summary, the terms seem unusually clear for a miracle.

The missing information lies outside that summary. Contracting removes the girl's soul from her body and seals it in a gem. A magical girl whose gem darkens completely becomes a witch. The emotional reversal from hope to despair is the energy the Incubators came to harvest.

Kyubey does not usually need to invent a false fact. When directly confronted, it explains the soul, the witches, its species, and its project of delaying cosmic entropy. Its most revealing defence is that the girls never asked.

The questions belong to one side

That defence treats questioning as though both parties arrived with the same map. They do not. A fourteen-year-old told that any wish can be granted has no reason to ask whether her soul will be extracted. She cannot ask what magical girls become when she has been taught to imagine witches as an unrelated enemy.

The information may be technically available, but the list of necessary questions is held by Kyubey. Disclosure on demand is therefore not informed consent. A person must know at least the categories of consequence before silence can count as declining further explanation.

This is why the distinction between lying and withholding matters without absolving Kyubey. Direct falsehood could be corrected by revelation. Here revelation leaves the deeper disagreement intact. Kyubey knows the information would disturb human girls and still regards that disturbance as irrational noise rather than evidence that the fact belongs before the decision.

A contractor that cannot understand the objection

The Incubators say they lack emotion. The claim is not merely an excuse; it explains the design of their accounting. A soul moved into a gem remains present and becomes easier to protect, so no relevant loss appears. A civilization extended by harvested energy outweighs the destruction of particular lives, so the exchange looks efficient.

Human protest cannot refute this account on its own terms because the omitted item is the standing of the person being used. Kyubey compares humanity to livestock farming and notes that human civilization benefited from Incubator interventions. The analogy does not accidentally expose hypocrisy; it reveals the moral universe in which the contract was written.

The horror is therefore not that a monster hides behind a cute face. It is that a perfectly functional system answers every question it recognizes while treating the signer's unasked, unimaginable questions as irrelevant. Nothing inside that procedure can tell Kyubey why a true answer given after commitment came too late.
