Puella Magi Madoka Magica makes every wish come true. Its cruelty does not lie in a malfunctioning miracle but in everything that a fulfilled wish fails to settle: what the signer could not know, what another person remains free to do, and how hope is converted into a system's raw material.
These essays follow five contracts and the different shapes of responsibility they create. They stay with the twelve-episode television series; the recap films, Rebellion, and later continuations are outside the argument. Full-series spoilers follow.
