The Homura who enters the main story is cold, precise, and unwilling to explain herself. Episode ten reveals an earlier girl newly discharged from hospital: physically weak, apologetic, frightened of classmates, and rescued by Madoka, who was already a magical girl.
When Madoka dies fighting Walpurgisnacht, Homura wishes to repeat their meeting and become the one who protects her rather than the one protected. Her time shield returns her to the beginning of the same month.
She improves on every attempt. She learns when witches appear, studies the city, acquires firearms and explosives, trains her body, abandons her glasses and braids, and stops spending time on explanations nobody believes. Failure produces data; data produces a more capable rescuer.
The results worsen. Kyubey eventually explains why Madoka's magical potential has become immense: Homura's repeated returns have made her the centre of accumulating karmic connections across timelines. Each attempt to save Madoka binds more consequence to Madoka.
The same work therefore moves two variables in opposite directions. Homura becomes better at protection while the target becomes more valuable to the Incubators and potentially more catastrophic as a witch. She interprets failure as insufficient preparation, so the rational response inside one loop—learn more and try again—deepens the larger trap.
Nothing about this makes her devotion false. It reveals that competence cannot correct a project whose success condition is changed by the attempt itself.
Only Homura remembers previous timelines. Everyone else meets her again for the first time. She knows their wishes, deaths, arguments, and transformations; they see an abrasive transfer student obstructing choices she refuses to justify.
Her growing ability is accompanied by isolation. Early Homura tries to tell the others. Disbelief and disaster teach her to work alone. Information that lets her predict friends also makes reciprocal relation difficult: she encounters people as the next positions in a sequence they have never lived.
Her original wish explicitly reverses roles—she will protect Madoka now. The desire is loving, and it also places Homura in a position from which she continually decides what Madoka must not do. The series does not reduce this to control, but it does not pretend that protection leaves the protected person's answer untouched.
At Walpurgisnacht, all preparation again proves insufficient. Homura nears despair and recognizes that another return may only repeat the structure. Then Madoka approaches with a wish Homura did not authorize and could not have designed for her. The person protected throughout the loops becomes the one who answers them.

暁美焰第一次出现的时候，是一个转学生。

而鹿目圆——那个时候已经是魔法少女的鹿目圆——救了她，并且对她好。

然后圆死了。
在跟瓦尔普吉斯之夜的战斗里，她死了，而焰什么也做不了。
丘比出现，问她要许什么。
她的愿望大意是：我想重新来过跟鹿目圆的相遇。我不要做那个被她保护的人，我要成为保护她的人。
愿望实现了。她得到的能力是时间——她可以让时间倒回到那个月的开头。
于是她开始重来。
这一节要说清楚，因为它是这一篇的骨头。
焰不是在原地打转。她每一次都在改进。
第一次，她什么也不会，跌跌撞撞，什么也救不下来。
后来她开始记东西：哪一天会发生什么，哪个魔女在哪里出现，谁在什么时候会做什么决定。
再后来她开始准备：她学会用时间停止去搬运东西，她从武器库里拿枪，拿炸药，拿反坦克炮。她把整个城市的地形背下来。
她还改变了自己：她扔掉眼镜，练身体，改说话方式，学会一个人行动，学会不解释。
她一次比一次能干，一次比一次准，一次比一次准备得充分。
而结果是：一次比一次坏。
这个问题在第十一话有答案，而这个答案是这部作品最冷的一处。
丘比解释：鹿目圆的因果，会在焰每一次的时间循环里累积。
每一次焰倒回时间，都会拉出一条新的时间线。而在每一条时间线上，圆都跟这些事情纠缠在一起。这些因果不会随着时间倒流而消失——它们全部堆在圆身上。
于是圆的潜力越来越大。大到丘比说，她可以成为一个能扭曲宇宙法则的魔法少女。
而丘比之所以死盯着她，正是因为这个。
也就是说：
焰为了保护那个人所做的每一件事，正是把那个人变成最有价值的目标的原因。
她跑得越快，那个东西越大。她重来得越多次，那个陷阱越深。
这不是她犯了什么错。她每一步的判断在当时都是对的，她的执行一次比一次好。
问题在于，她在优化的那个变量，跟决定结果的那个变量，是同一个——只是方向相反。
她做得越好，她要防的那件事就越大。
而这一点她自己不知道。她知道结果一次比一次坏，而她的解释是"我还不够快、还不够强、还没有算准"——于是她下一次更快、更强、算得更准。
还有一层，是关于她自己的。
每一次重来，只有她记得。
其他所有人回到那个月的开头，重新做那些事，重新说那些话，重新犯那些错。她们不认识她。
而焰认识她们全部。她知道谁会在哪一天死，知道谁的愿望是什么，知道谁最后会变成什么样子。
于是她没有办法跟任何人建立关系。她试过——最初几次她跟她们说实话，结果是没有人信她。
于是她改了做法：她不说了。她一个人行动，一个人准备，一个人扛。
她越是能干，她越是一个人。
而这件事在别人眼里的样子是：一个冷冰冰的、不合群的、动机不明的转学生。
包括在圆眼里。
这一篇不打算判断这件事。
而有几样东西可以摆出来。
她的愿望里有一句是明确的：我不要做那个被她保护的人，我要成为保护她的人。
也就是说，这个愿望的内容包含一个位置的交换——她要坐到那个"保护者"的位置上去。
而这个位置，一旦被人坐上，它就不再是空的。圆此后的每一条时间线上，都有一个已经在替她做决定的人。
作品也没有让焰意识到这一点。它没有安排任何一场戏让谁对她说"你这样也是一种控制"。
它只是让她一遍一遍地做下去，让因果一层一层地堆，让那个被保护的人的分量一次比一次重。
到了这部作品的时间线上——也就是观众看到的这一次——焰已经做了很多次了。
她一开场就在阻止圆签约。她对每一个人不客气。她随身带着一整个军火库。
而这一次，她还是失败了。
瓦尔普吉斯之夜来了，城市在毁，她一个人在打，打不过。
她跪在那儿，宝石已经黑得差不多了。
而她那时候说的话，大意是：我不知道该怎么办了。这样下去，我只会一次又一次地重复同样的事。
然后圆走了过来。
而圆许的那个愿望，跟前面所有人的都不一样。
