The Eyes of the Mind
For Spinoza, a demonstration is not merely a record of what the mind sees. It is how the mind sees.

The human mind cannot be completely destroyed with the body; something of it remains eternal. That is Proposition Twenty-Three of Part V.
The demonstration moves through three sentences. In God there is necessarily a conception or idea expressing the essence of the human body, and something corresponding to it necessarily belongs to the mind’s essence. Duration measured by time is attributed to the mind only insofar as it expresses the body’s actual existence—that is, while the body endures. What is conceived through God’s essence with eternal necessity is therefore something eternal belonging to the mind.
The claim is about eternity in this account, not simply about a very long continuation of personal life.
We feel and experience it
The scholium returns to the idea that expresses the body’s essence under a form of eternity. It is a definite mode of thought belonging to the mind and is necessarily eternal.
Then comes a limit. We cannot remember having existed before the body. The body could contain no traces of that existence, and eternity cannot be defined through time or bear a temporal relation.
Nevertheless, Spinoza says, we feel and experience that we are eternal.
He explains why the language of feeling can enter here. The mind senses what it conceives through understanding no less than what it retains in memory. The eyes through which the mind sees and observes things are the demonstrations themselves.
In the linked Latin text, references to eyes occur seven times. Elsewhere they concern bodily eyes: people dreaming with their eyes open, or rays reflected from water into the eyes. Here the image is given a different task. These are the eyes of the mind.
The protractor
At school you measure the angles of a triangle. Added together they give 179 degrees, or 181. The marks are hard to align; the drawn lines have thickness.
Later you learn a proof, drawing through one vertex a line parallel to the opposite side.
The protractor measured this triangle on the paper. The proof lets you grasp a relation the imperfect measurements were trying to approach.
That makes the contrast approachable. It does not, by itself, establish Spinoza’s account of eternity.
What time cannot measure
The scholium continues with a consequence. We do not remember existing before the body, yet we experience the mind as eternal insofar as it involves the body’s essence under a form of eternity.
Existence understood in that way cannot be measured by time or explained through duration. The repeated references to time keep separating what it cannot define from what belongs to the body’s actual continuance.
This is why the account cannot simply be read as a recovered memory of an earlier life. The text itself has denied the relevant memory and the temporal measure.
At the end
The mind is said to endure, and its existence can be measured by a definite span, only insofar as it involves the body’s actual existence.
Spinoza adds that only within that limit does the mind have the power to determine things’ existence by time and conceive them as enduring.
The scholium does not merely use the word eternal. It keeps telling the reader which familiar way of imagining it will not do.

Before supplying symbolic notation, the SAE First Critique says that formalization does not improve a commitment’s standing merely by writing it in symbols. Spinoza’s scholium is making a different claim—not about typography, but about what the mind sees through: demonstrations themselves. Both passages concern form and understanding, but they should not be made to say the same thing.

Location: V.23, demonstration and scholium. Eternity is distinguished from temporal duration and from memory of an existence before the body.
The seven eye references were checked by the Latin ocul- forms across the five linked parts. The manuscript’s exact division of five references to time is replaced by the textual distinction itself; no inference of personal immortality is added.
