Truth Is Its Own Standard

The light reveals the room—and, in doing so, reveals itself.
Proposition Forty-Three of Part II says that a person with a true idea also knows that they have a true idea, and cannot doubt the truth of what is understood.
The demonstration begins with God. A true idea in the human mind is an adequate idea in God insofar as God is expressed through that mind. There must also be an idea of this idea, belonging to the same mind. The person therefore has a true idea of their own knowledge. At the last step, this is said to amount, self-evidently, to certainty.
Clear enough in itself
The scholium first points back to the explanation of an idea of an idea in the scholium to Proposition Twenty-One. Then it tells the reader that Proposition Forty-Three is already clear enough in itself.
Having a true idea, Spinoza says, involves the highest certainty. It means understanding something fully, or in the best way. To doubt this would be to think of an idea as something mute, like a picture on a panel, rather than as an act of understanding.
What could be clearer or more certain than a true idea and thus serve as its standard? As light reveals itself along with darkness, truth is the standard of itself and of falsity.
The point is not that an independently visible object happens to carry a certificate. The activity of understanding is doing the work.
When the lights return
The power fails at night. Then the lamp comes on. Tables and chairs become visible; so does the light that reveals them.
Nobody takes a torch to the lamp to check whether it really is shining.
The scene helps us enter the image. It is not a separate proof of Spinoza’s account of certainty.
The questions he thinks he has answered
Spinoza says he believes this answers several questions. If a true idea differs from a false one merely by agreeing with its object, what greater reality does it possess? How do false ideas arise? How can a person know with certainty that an idea agrees with its object?
He says again that he thinks the questions have been answered, then directs the reader backwards.
For the difference between true and false, look to Proposition Thirty-Five: falsity lies in a lack of knowledge, and a true idea differs from a false one as something present differs from what is absent. For the causes of error, consult Propositions Nineteen through Thirty-Five.
As for knowing that the idea agrees with its object, his answer is that one knows through having the idea itself. Truth is its own standard.
At the end, the explanation returns to God. In truly perceiving things, the mind is part of God’s infinite intellect. Clear and distinct ideas in the mind are true with the same necessity as God’s ideas.
At the end
The demonstration begins with God, and the scholium closes by returning there. Between those points stands a question: how could anyone know that they understand something unless they had first understood it?
The question does not introduce another external measuring instrument. It directs us back toward the understanding whose certainty is under discussion.

The SAE First Critique makes the standing of knowledge answerable to subsequent checking rather than to an independently available ruler measuring correspondence with the thing itself. Spinoza’s scholium locates the standard differently: having a true idea does not require another measure to certify it. The difference matters as much as the resemblance.
