Why Self-Questioning Is Not Enough

A person can examine an argument conscientiously. She rereads it, checks each premise, and writes the strongest objections she can imagine. These practices matter, but they cannot certify that every blind spot has been found. The designer of the audit, the selector of its scope, and the receiver of its result remain the same person.

The point is not that self-deception is inevitable. It is that independence cannot be certified by its own source. A procedure may operate with perfect internal consistency while reproducing one omission at every stage. Self-questioning improves an account; it cannot finally warrant the sentence “I have found everything that I am unable to see.”

The other's interrogation therefore enters the First Critique. Another person contributes more than additional information. She asks from a path that does not coincide completely with mine. That noncoincidence gives the check an independence I cannot manufacture through another round of self-inspection.

Others Can Be Wrong

Independence is not correctness. Another reader may misunderstand the text, carry a different blind spot, or mistake local habits for universal standards. If every external objection automatically lowers a claim's status, judgment merely moves from the author to the loudest critic.

Interrogation is therefore a source of validation, not a court of final appeal. An objector must also state objects, levels, branches, and postulates. She must distinguish a content error from an address error and both from an alternative undertaking. Her objection enters the register and remains open to questioning.

This symmetry is not courtesy. If “the critic” is naturally exempt, critique becomes an identity endowed with privilege. SAE diagnoses the false claiming of propositions, not a class of people. It puts claims on trial without placing the whole person of the author in the dock.

Stopping Without a Final Guarantor

If A audits B and C audits A, who audits C? A search for complete assurance produces an infinite chain. The conventional solution appoints an authority somewhere: a community, experts, a formal system, or an ideal observer. But that appointment needs a credential of its own.

The First Critique refuses to stop the chain at an unexamined judge. It changes the question from “Who guarantees permanent infallibility?” to “How does the current judgment expose its address and remain available for review?” Ending a particular deliberation need not mean ending every future examination.

An essay can reach a definite conclusion. An institution can decide before a deadline. A study can be published on present evidence. They need only preserve dependencies, objections, and routes of revision. Action comes from provisional settlement, not absolute appellate authority.

Interrogating Claims, Not Personalities

Philosophical disagreement easily binds propositions to persons. To identify credential overreach sounds like an accusation of dishonesty. To grant one local point sounds like support for an author's entire position. The First Critique asks us to separate them.

Claims have addresses; persons are not the sum of their claims. We can say that a sentence is derivable in a classical branch and has no cross-branch standing without declaring its author unqualified to speak. We can honor an author's achievements elsewhere without transferring that prestige into a new credential for the present sentence.

The separation protects revision. If an error is identical with a personality, withdrawing a sentence feels like withdrawing oneself. If the audit concerns registration, downgrade and readdressing are ordinary parts of work. A person may correct an account without first confessing to being a defective person.

A Court That Never Permanently Adjourns

The institutional shape of the First Critique is not a supreme court but a court that never permanently adjourns. It has three standing devices. Registration states the content, status, warrant, and alternatives of each undertaking. Diagnosis compares credentials in use with credentials earned. Interrogation lets noncoincident others participate in settlement.

Permanent availability for review does not leave every matter undecided forever. A case can be settled under present materials and an entry used in further work. The judgment simply receives no license that outruns its address. New evidence, another branch, or another reader may provide grounds to reopen it.

Who questions the questioner? Anyone willing to place the question inside the same reflexive procedure. The answer is not a name but a kind of work. No origin entitles anyone to the final word. The weight of a sentence comes from the account it exposes and the rounds of noncoincident interrogation it can withstand.
