Authority With Every Receipt

Noboru Wataya rises through institutions in an unbroken sequence. Academic credentials give him expert authority. Television converts expertise into public familiarity. An inherited constituency turns familiarity into political power.

Nothing about the ascent is fraudulent. He writes the books, performs well on television, and wins votes. Society issues each form of authority according to its own rules. That is why Toru’s disgust is so difficult to use. Noboru speaks cleanly, never appears ridiculous, and commits no provable offense. After their conversations Toru feels contaminated but cannot name a fact that would justify the feeling.

Murakami gives this difficulty a supernatural body. Noboru can enter people and remove something from within them. Creta Kano says that after encountering him she ceased to be the person she had been, though she cannot name what was taken. Kumiko becomes another site of the same force.

The supernatural violation and the conventional career are not explanations of one another. They are two representations placed side by side. A polished commentator can enter an audience’s sense of reality without anyone experiencing the process as theft. A politician can organize lives through properly granted authority. The uncanny image makes visible what legitimate surfaces conceal: influence that changes people while leaving no admissible evidence.

An Unequal Contest

Kumiko grew up inside a rigid bureaucratic family. She was separated from her parents in early childhood, lost a sister, and has a dark, unresolved relationship with Noboru. After becoming pregnant, she has an abortion because she fears transmitting something carried in the family. The attempt to stop inheritance creates the opening through which she feels Noboru enters her.

Her later letter to Toru is lucid. She describes affairs and says she cannot return. The composure makes the account more difficult, not less. It sounds like a voluntary explanation while describing a self she experiences as altered from within.

Noboru enters the conflict with a university, television studio, electorate, parliamentary office, and generational network. Toru has a rented house, no job, and a dry well. They cannot meet on neutral ground because every recognized ground already favors one side.

The asymmetry is not simply that one man has more power. Noboru's language arrives already classified as evidence, while Toru's experience arrives already sounding irrational.

Toru does not sue, call a press conference, or build a public accusation. He possesses nothing those routes could carry. He climbs instead into the dry well beside an abandoned house and sits in darkness.

This is not withdrawal from the conflict. It is the search for a position Noboru’s credentials did not create and cannot certify. The well will lead toward a hotel room that does not exist on any map of public authority. Murakami does not pretend this is a fair remedy. The strange route is necessary because the ordinary ones have no category for the injury.
