The Life Left After a Job

In June 1984, Toru Okada is cooking spaghetti when the telephone rings. The pasta becomes softer than he wanted. This is how the novel begins.

Toru is thirty and has recently quit a junior position at a law firm. He cannot offer a dramatic reason. The work simply felt wrong. Afterward he cooks, washes clothes, irons shirts through twelve careful steps, swims, reads, and listens to music while his wife Kumiko supports the household as an editor.

Murakami’s attention to these routines is not filler. Once Toru leaves the institution that supplied a title and daily direction, these acts are what remain. Kumiko’s father was a bureaucrat; her brother, Noboru Wataya, is an academic and television commentator on his way into politics. Each man carries a socially legible name and position. Toru has no company, business card, family network, or active job search.

Noboru can therefore criticize him without insulting him. What future can a thirty-year-old unemployed husband offer? What will happen to Kumiko? Every sentence sounds like responsible concern. Toru cannot disprove the values behind them. He can only recognize that a life organized by those values is not his.

The real dispute is not employment versus idleness. It is whether a socially approved future gives one person the right to declare another life futureless.

The People Missing From the Register

First the family cat disappears. It bears Noboru Wataya’s name as a private joke between Toru and Kumiko. Toru searches a dead-end alley and meets May Kasahara, a sixteen-year-old who has stopped attending school.

Then Kumiko disappears, leaving a note asking him not to search. Noboru announces that she has another man and wants a divorce. The novel’s long search begins with a peculiar disadvantage: Toru has no institutionally recognized instrument for finding a person who has officially left by choice. Police, employers, lawyers, and family all offer no route—or belong to the brother he distrusts.

What he has is savings, a rented house, an empty cat bowl, and an expanding circle of socially unclassifiable people: the psychic Malta Kano; her sister Creta, who speaks of prostitution of body and mind; May, the school refuser; Lieutenant Mamiya, unable to resume ordinary life after war; and later Nutmeg and Cinnamon, who practice work no standard profession can name.

The people who help Toru have also slipped from the table of recognized roles.

Somewhere nearby an invisible bird cries as if winding a spring. Toru calls it the wind-up bird: perhaps it winds the world so life can continue. During his idle months he hears it often. Eventually he suspects the world’s spring has been wound incorrectly.

The search for Kumiko becomes inseparable from another question: when the public order offers no language for what is wrong, can people outside its categories form enough of a world to answer one another?

Haruki Murakami’s The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, published in Japan in three volumes in 1994–95. Full-book spoilers.
