“Glory to mankind” closes mission briefings, honors the dead, and gives YoRHa its reason for existing. Android soldiers believe that humanity survives on the Moon and waits for them to reclaim Earth. The Moon does contain human culture, genetic records, language, and history. What it does not contain is a living human being.
The transmissions of the Council of Humanity are automated. YoRHa salutes a broadcast loop. The deception does more than motivate a military campaign. It supplies an absent object for a purpose installed into android life.
Androids were made to serve humanity. Once humanity is extinct, that foundational directive points nowhere. The official reasoning is that disclosure would collapse morale and perhaps android civilization itself. A human presence is therefore fabricated on the Moon: not to win one battle, but to keep an entire population intelligible to itself.
They are not merely deceived into fighting. They are deceived into understanding why they exist. A false order removes judgment about one action; a false ground reorganizes every judgment that follows. Courage, loyalty, and sacrifice are placed inside a story whose authors already know the promised beneficiaries are gone.
The Bunker Commander knows humanity is extinct. She continues to receive the automated Council’s messages and send soldiers into combat. The game does not present her as a simple villain. Her burden is real, and her reason is recognizable: the others cannot survive the truth, so she must carry it for them.
But that defense contains an unasked judgment. Nobody below her can answer, “I can bear it,” or, “I may break, but I still want to know.” Protection takes the form of choosing the reality in which other persons must live. This is the same grammar 9S uses when he hides his discovery from 2B, enlarged to the scale of an army.
The Commander does not know the whole plan. YoRHa exists to sustain the fiction of humanity and to collect combat data for later android models. Once the data is sufficient, the Bunker’s vulnerability is deliberately exposed. The enemy will erase the organization, its records, and the evidence that the lunar story was manufactured.
The fall of the Bunker is therefore not an unforeseen defeat. It is a scheduled disposal. The Commander who thinks she is guarding the secret is herself contained within it. Her superior access changes the shelf on which she is stored, not whether she will be spent.
A technical record about YoRHa black boxes contains the story’s coldest reasoning. Using standard android artificial intelligence in units designed for eventual disposal would be “inhumane.” The author has noticed an ethical problem and speaks in the language of responsible engineering.
Two remedies were possible: stop treating the units as disposable, or alter the kind of consciousness installed in them. The plan selects the second. The practice remains; the victim is redesigned so that the practice no longer appears to count as cruelty.
This is instrumentalization with a conscience. The memorandum does not deny that discarding persons would be wrong. It ensures that the discarded beings can be classified as something else. Their destruction date is not a wartime contingency. Disposal belongs to the specification that precedes their manufacture.
YoRHa black boxes are derived from machine cores. The android elite is built from the same kind of material it has been ordered to eliminate. That choice follows the earlier classification: if machine life does not count, its core becomes available both for destruction and for procurement.
Calling something an enemy does more than authorize violence against it. The name can turn bodies into raw material. 9S’s horror is therefore physical as well as ideological. Every battle opposes beings whose conscious structures are less separate than the war requires anyone to admit.
The machine lifeforms were created by alien invaders. By the time 2B and 9S find those creators, the aliens have long been dead, killed by the machines that no longer needed them. The android side fights for extinct humanity; the machine side continues after its creators’ extinction.
Across millennia, two manufactured populations carry commands whose authors and beneficiaries have vanished. The emptiness on both sides does not make their losses imaginary. It reveals how an assigned purpose can continue operating after nobody remains who could answer for it.
A life organized around another person or a shared cause is not necessarily diminished. People freely make family, friendship, care, and public work central to who they are. Nor is following an instruction inherently shameful.
YoRHa’s wrong lies elsewhere: the purpose is fabricated, its fabricators know it is fabricated, and the people who must die for it never receive the facts needed to decide whether to continue. The soldiers’ courage remains real. What is stolen is authorship over what that courage will serve.
If the truth were disclosed, some androids would leave and some might remain—to protect living companions, preserve Earth, or choose a new common project. Outwardly, those who stayed could fight the same battles. Inwardly, the war would finally belong to them.
The plan depends on machine cores being morally empty. Yet machines name themselves, form villages, make art, pursue philosophy, become vain, generous, violent, and afraid. The supposedly inferior material produces lives no procurement document predicted.
2B’s pain, 9S’s curiosity, and Pascal’s village do not become unreal because their designers did not authorize them. They expose the contradiction at the center of YoRHa: the system must declare these beings nonpersons precisely because their actual lives would otherwise make the plan impossible to defend.

每一次任务完成，寄叶部队的成员都会说同一句话。
两个人面对面站着，抬手行礼，然后一起说出来——
荣誉归于人类。
这句话在游戏里出现了很多很多次。开场说，任务结束说，牺牲的人临死前说，通讯里例行公事地说。它是这支部队的全部意义所在：他们打这场仗，是为了把地球从机械生命体手里夺回来，好让避难在月球上的人类回家。
有一件事他们不知道。
人类已经灭绝了几千年。一个人都没有了。
9S是扫描型机体，他的活就是往下挖。挖得够深的时候，他找到了月球服务器。
那上面确实有东西：人类的历史、艺术、语言、基因数据。整整齐齐，保存完好，一份不缺。
那是一座档案馆。
不是避难所。里面没有一个活着的人，也很久没有过了。
那么每隔一段时间从月球发下来的、署名"人类议会"的指令和嘉奖是谁发的？
是那台服务器自己发的。它被设定成定期广播，内容是预先写好的。收到的人以为那是上级的声音，其实那是一段循环播放的录音，播给一群不知道自己在对着空气敬礼的士兵听。
这场仗已经打了十四轮。十四次大规模战役，十四次伤亡，十四次"我们离夺回地球更近了一步"。
这个谎言不是为了打赢仗编的。
人造人是人类造出来的。他们的核心指令，或者说他们存在的根据，就是保护人类。这一条写在最底层，不是他们选的，是他们被造出来的时候就装好的。
人类没了，这条指令就悬空了。
一个存在的全部意义如果指向一个已经消失的对象，会怎么样？这个故事给出的回答是：会崩。士气崩，秩序崩，然后所有人一起停在原地，不知道该干什么，也不知道自己算什么。
所以谎言被造了出来。人类还活着，在月球上，等着回来。你们要为他们夺回地球。
他们不是被骗去打仗的，他们是被骗去存在的。
这两件事差别很大。骗一个人去做一件他本来也会做的事，和骗一个人去成为一个他本来不会成为的东西，不是一回事。前者拿走的是他的一次判断，后者拿走的是他所有判断所依据的那个东西。
寄叶部队每一个成员的一生——他们的忠诚、勇气、牺牲，他们临死前那句话——全部立在这上面。
地堡里有一个人知道真相：司令官。
她是寄叶部队全体成员中唯一被告知这件事的人。她每天照常下达命令，照常回应"人类议会"的通讯，照常把部下送去死，照常在他们死后念一句荣誉归于人类。
故事没有把她写成坏人，她的理由也不难猜。她相信这个谎言是必要的：说出真相，这支部队就散了；这支部队散了，人造人就完了。她一个人扛着一件所有人都扛不住的事，扛了很久。
这是一种很常见的立场，现实里到处都是。它的模样通常是这样：我知道，但他们不该知道；我这么做是为了他们好。
值得停一停的是这句话的结构。
它一定要先认定对方承受不了真相，才成立。而这个认定，是替对方做的。
被瞒着的人从来没有机会说"我扛得住"，也没有机会说"我扛不住，但我还是想知道"。他们连这个问题被问过都不知道。
司令官承担了很多。但她承担的方式，是替上千个人决定了他们该活在哪一层现实里，而这一千个人当中没有一个被征询过。
上一篇写过9S瞒着2B的那件事。手法是同一个，出发点也是同一个，只是规模不同。这个故事在这一点上非常一致：它不把隐瞒写成恶意，它写的是隐瞒和保护根本分不开——分不开，不等于就没有问题。
故事最后，9S在塔顶读到了寄叶计划真正的机密文件。那份文件的密级说明写得很清楚：包括地堡司令官在内的任何寄叶部队成员，不得阅读。
也就是说，司令官以为自己是知情者，其实她也在被瞒着的那一层里，只是那一层比较高。
真正的内容是这样的：
寄叶部队的存在有两个目的。第一个是维持"人类还活着"这个假象。第二个是——为下一代人造人采集战斗数据。
等数据采够了，地堡的后门会被主动打开，让机械生命体攻进来，把寄叶计划的全部实体和数据销毁干净：机体、服务器、记录，以及这份文件本身。
不留痕迹。这样下一代人才会继续相信。
所以后来发生的那场屠杀——那场让整支部队几乎全灭、让2B感染病毒、让9S彻底失掉一切的灾难——不是敌人打进来了。
是门被人从里面打开的。而这一步，从计划立项的第一天起就写在纸上。
在这个计划里，连知情的人也是耗材。 司令官以为自己在替所有人保守一个秘密，实际上她是这个秘密的一部分，和她的部下一起被算进了同一栏预算。
这里有一个很冷的推论：这个系统连一个真正的主使者都没有。往上找，找不到那个决定这一切的人。写下这份文件的人早就不在了，而计划还在自己往下跑。
全篇最要紧的东西，在一份关于黑盒的技术文件里。
黑盒是寄叶机体的核心部件，相当于他们的心脏和意识所在的地方。普通人造人用的是常规AI，寄叶部队用的不是。
那份文件解释了原因。它的措辞大意是：
考虑到把常规AI装在注定要被废弃的机体上，是不人道的。
请把这句话读慢一点。
写这句话的人不是在掩盖什么。他没有心虚，没有含糊其辞，也没有把这件事塞在附件的第七页。他是在正经处理一个伦理问题，并且认为自己处理得很得当。他真的想过这件事残不残忍。
他想到的结论是：造出一个有正常人格的存在，用完就扔，不对。
请注意他没有反对哪一半。
他没有反对"用完就扔"。他反对的是"有正常人格"。
于是他把后面那一项改掉了。
一个系统发现自己的做法对某种存在来说太残忍的时候，它有两条路可以走：改做法，或者改那种存在。这份文件选了第二条，而且是带着善意选的。
这是我在别的作品里没见过的一处写法。工具化通常被写成冷酷、贪婪、把人不当人。这里不是。这里的语气是关切的，是一个负责任的工程师在会议纪要上写下的一行结论。他解决了问题。他晚上睡得着。
而这一行结论的实际内容是：我们不能让他们算数，因为如果他们算数，我们就不能这么用他们了。
还有一个词值得单独拎出来看：注定要被废弃。
这个说法是完成时的。不是"有可能会被废弃"，不是"如果战况不利可能要放弃"，是已经定下来了。而这份文件写在他们被制造之前——也就是说，在第一台寄叶机体下线之前，它的报废日期就已经排进了日程。
他们不是打着打着变成了消耗品。他们是按消耗品的规格订做的。
这一点决定了后面所有的事。2B的处刑任务不是意外，9S的好奇不是隐患，地堡的沦陷不是失误。这些全都不是这个计划出的问题，这些就是这个计划本身。
这份文件后面还附了一句风险提示，说黑盒有导致机体暴走、转向攻击我方的案例。
这句话现在读起来很有意思。它承认了那样东西不完全受控，也就是说，它承认了那样东西没有被彻底改造干净。文件把这一条列为风险。
那么，寄叶机体的黑盒到底是用什么做的？
用机械生命体的核心改造的。
机械生命体，就是他们要消灭的那个东西。他们被造出来的全部理由，就是杀掉那个东西。
9S读到这一段的时候，反复说了几遍：不可能。
这不是修辞。这句话在生理层面成立：他每一次挥刀砍向机械生命体，都是在砍和自己心脏同一种材质的东西。他和敌人的意识结构，本来就是同一套。
每一次战斗，都是同一种东西在杀同一种东西。
这一层和上一层是连着的。为了让他们不算人，系统必须找一样"不算人"的材料来造他们。手边最现成、也最理直气壮的那一样，就是那个已经被宣布为敌人的东西。
敌人这个名分，在这里的用处不只是给他们一个作战对象。它还给了系统一个采购渠道。
一样东西一旦被定性为"那不算什么"，它就同时变成了两件事：可以被消灭的，和可以被使用的。这两件事从来是一起来的。
到这里为止说的都是人造人。机械生命体那边呢？
机械生命体是外星人造的。外星人入侵地球，制造了这支机械军团，人类被赶到月球——这是官方版本，也是所有人都相信的版本。
9S和2B在地下找到了外星人。
是一堆尸体。已经死了很久了。
杀掉他们的是他们自己造的机械生命体。理由和这个故事里的其他理由一样简单：那支军团进化了，某一天不再需要主人了。
所以这场打了几千年、经历了十四轮战役的战争，实际状况是：
两边都在替早已不存在的主人打仗。
一边为一个灭绝了几千年的物种夺回地球，一边为一群被自己弄死的造物守着地球。两边用同一种材料做成，执行两条同样悬空的指令，互相消灭了几千年。
这就是所谓"荣誉归于人类"的全部内容。
有一件事需要说清楚，不然容易走偏。
一个人为别人的目的活着，本身不是坏事。为家人活，为一件自己信的事业活，为一个具体的人活，都可以是好好活过的一辈子。指令这个东西也不是天然有问题——人一辈子要接的指令多了去了，接下来，做好它，这里面没什么可耻的。
这个故事的问题不在这里。
问题是那个目的是别人替他们写的，是假的，写的人从一开始就知道它是假的，并且计划好了在合适的时候把知道这件事的人一起销毁。
那么寄叶部队的成员是不是活得没有价值？
不是。9S的好奇是真的，2B的痛苦是真的，那些在地堡的走廊里互相打招呼、一起说荣誉归于人类的人，他们彼此之间的信任也是真的。这些东西没有因为上面那个谎言而变成假的。这一点很重要——他们不是傻子，也不是笑话。
真正被拿走的，是另一样东西：
他们从来没有机会知道自己在为什么活着，因此也从来没有机会决定要不要为它活。
一个人可以选择为一件事去死。这个故事里的人没有这个选项。他们不是选错了，是压根没有轮到他们选。
设想另一个版本：把真相告诉他们。人类没有了，地球夺回来也没有人回来，这场仗打赢了什么也不会发生。然后问一句，你们还打不打。
那个版本里，一定有人会走。也一定有人会留下来——为了地面上还活着的同类，为了一起出过任务的那几个人，或者只是因为不想把这颗星球让给别的东西。
留下来的那些人，做的事和现在一模一样：同样的仗，同样的死法，同样一句可以喊也可以不喊的口号。
外面看不出任何区别。
但那会是他们自己的一辈子。
这不是一个关于"被骗得很惨"的故事。这是一个关于"连是否上当这个问题都轮不到你问"的故事。
最后留一件事。
系统为了让寄叶部队不算人，用机械生命体的核心来造他们。这个选择有一个前提：机械生命体不算什么，就是一堆按程序运转的铁疙瘩，拿来当零件正好。
那个前提出了问题。
在地球的另一头，那些铁疙瘩里有一台给自己取名叫帕斯卡，建了一个不打仗的村子，收留孩子，读哲学书。有一台想当歌手，为了让另一台机器看她一眼，把自己改造成了一个人形的怪物。有一台整天被追随者围着谈论真理，最后受不了了，独自出门去找答案，再没回来。
它们不是被设计成这样的。没有任何一条程序里写着"要建一个村子"或者"要为爱情发疯"。
这些东西是自己长出来的。
