The Merge

Ethereum replaced proof of work and sharply reduced energy use, while concentration, MEV, and censorship questions moved into staking and block building.

A live machine changes its engine

In September 2022, Ethereum shifted its consensus from proof of work to proof of stake without restarting application state. The transition was an engineering achievement: users and contracts continued while the mechanism selecting and finalizing blocks changed underneath them.

A real cost fell

The energy demand associated with competitive mining dropped by roughly the scale Ethereum researchers had projected—well over ninety-nine percent. This was not mere accounting. Specialized mining ceased to secure the chain. Yet lower energy cost did not answer every prior criticism; it changed which resources and organizations mattered.

Concentration changed form

Mining pools and hardware supply gave way to stake, liquid-staking providers, large custodians, client software, relays, and block builders. MEV separation made block construction more specialized. The system could become cleaner in energy and still require careful measurement of correlated control, censorship pressure, and revenue concentration.

A solved problem reveals the next boundary

The Merge shows why progress should be stated precisely. Ethereum removed the need for proof-of-work mining from consensus; that achievement need not be diminished. Precisely because the old cost was genuinely reduced, attention can move to the new interfaces rather than pretending either that nothing improved or that every question was solved.
