Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.
The student returns to the same spring noticeboard and repeatedly selects a new path: film society, softball club, discipleship under Higuchi, cycling, the underground Lucky Cat restaurant, library policing, an English circle. These activities should produce different university lives. That is the theory behind the wish and behind much ordinary regret: alter one fork and the future person changes with it.
Instead, each route brings him to the same tatami room, the same failed approach to Akashi, the same resentment of Ozu, and the same conclusion that another club would have saved the two years. The animation proves the point formally. Openings, compositions, rhythms, and final complaints recur until the viewer can predict the ending before the protagonist can.
The laughter generated by repetition is part of the argument. No character needs to announce that the problem lies within him. By the fourth variation, the audience has already learned what the student remains unable to see.
Within each route his behavior is stable. He joins, discovers that the organization fails his expectations, and turns into its internal critic. He performs elaborate tasks and becomes entangled in energetic nonsense. He admires Akashi and says nothing decisive. Two years pass; he blames the original selection.
That conclusion moves the cause into a closed past. Present causes would require present action. He might speak, leave, apologize, or discover that the desired result is not desirable. A lost fork requires only regret. Each timeline supplies fresh evidence—the club is noisy, the master unreliable, the organization ridiculous—yet the variety of reasons eventually reveals that none can explain the repeated outcome.
Ozu, Akashi, Higuchi, Hanuki, Jōgasaki, and Aijima appear no matter which club he chooses. Their roles change, but the people remain. The supposedly decisive institutional choice never determines who is available to him. What changes is whether he can recognize what their presence means.
He calls the years empty, while viewers have seen filmmaking, bets, strange missions, arguments by the Kamo River, and a dense community of trouble. None has much “practical value,” as he correctly observes. The unanswered question is why practical value became the sole unit in which a life may count.
Changing roads cannot rescue someone who carries an empty ideal and the same evasions onto every road. The alternatives do establish something else: he was never waiting for life to arrive. He was already inside one, surrounded by the same particular people, while looking sideways at a version too empty to disappoint him.
