Looking for a Self That Does Not Exist

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

A life defined only by not being this one

An unnamed third-year student opens the series by declaring that his first two years at university produced nothing of practical value. The declaration sounds less like confession than prosecution. His dazzling, archaic, breathless narration has spent enormous energy refining the case against fate.

The evidence is an expression: a “rose-colored campus life.” It should contain the right club, congenial friends, romance with a black-haired maiden, and everything absent from his present. Yet he never describes an ordinary day inside it. The phrase has no schedule, inconvenience, disagreement, or failed conversation. It means only: not this.

That emptiness gives the fantasy an unfair advantage. A real life contains rain, irritating friends, wasted afternoons, and embarrassing choices. An undescribed alternative has no defects because nothing has occurred there. When one side of a comparison has detail and the other has only promise, the promise will always look cleaner.

Regret as a protected position

The student’s dissatisfaction always points backward: if only he had chosen another club, avoided Ozu, or turned at the earlier fork. A forward desire can be attempted and disproved. A counterfactual self cannot. He can neither meet that self nor discover that its life is also awkward.

Regret therefore offers safety. If the cause lies in an irreversible past, no vulnerable action is required now. He does not have to speak to Akashi, risk rejection, or define what he actually wants. The diagnosis feels objective while quietly protecting him from the tests that might prove it wrong.

Not laziness but an empty measure

The series does not portray him as idle or incapable. He attends, plots, writes, runs errands, joins absurd campaigns, and thinks at astonishing speed. His life is crowded with Ozu, Akashi, Master Higuchi, and a succession of events most students could dine out on for years.

What he lacks is not activity but a measure with content. Nobody can supply it for him. Advice fails because replacing the measure requires admitting that he has been holding it, not that destiny suspended it above him.

At the episode’s end he wishes to return to the club fair and choose again. The show agrees. The experiment will change the club while preserving the judge, then ask which variable was ever doing the work.

Primary text: The Tatami Galaxy, the eleven-episode 2010 Madhouse television anime directed by Masaaki Yuasa and scripted by Makoto Ueda, adapted from Tomihiko Morimi’s 2004 novel. Tatami Time Machine Blues is outside this series’ scope.
