The Useless Thing Came from Outside

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

Maomao’s forearms are marked by scars. She made many of them herself by testing poisons on her own body.

Most of the time she is controlled, dry, and difficult to impress. Jinshi’s celebrated face leaves her cold; rank interests her mainly as a source of inconvenience. Put an unfamiliar poison in front of her, however, and the disguise falls away. Her eyes brighten. She leans closer. She wants a sample.

The series uses this transformation as comedy. It is also the one place where Maomao cannot maintain the distance on which her survival strategy depends.

An interest with negative institutional value

What do those private experiments earn her?

Not promotion. Her medical knowledge becomes useful when it solves a case, but the scars themselves are not a qualification the court wishes to reward. They do not reliably preserve her life; they have made her seriously ill. They do not produce money or please a superior. Her adoptive father disapproves of the danger.

In the palace’s accounting, the habit is worse than useless. She has continued for years.

This suggests a practical test. To ask how much of a person remains her own inside an arrangement, look for the thing she does that the arrangement cannot use. If every ability can be translated into rank, approval, money, or service, the institution has a language for all of her. An interest it cannot redeem marks a space its ledger does not close.

For Maomao, the scars mark that space.

It did not grow from nowhere

Calling this “her” interest can tempt us into a familiar heroic story: unlike the other women, Maomao possesses enough individuality to resist. The story itself supplies a harder answer. She did not invent pharmacology alone.

Luomen raised her.

A former court physician and eunuch, he now runs a small pharmacy in the pleasure district. He taught Maomao to recognize medicinal plants, prepare treatments, observe symptoms, and think through causes rather than accept the first available explanation.

Luomen also carries the damage of punishment. His knees were mutilated after a failure at court, and he walks slowly with support. Yet he continues to practice medicine, treating courtesans and poor patients, sometimes for little or no payment. What was done to his body constrained him severely without finishing the account of what his hands and knowledge could still do.

An outside is a source, not merely an exit

Place Luomen beside Maomao and “outside” becomes more concrete. It is not only the geographic location to which she might return after two years. It is a person who taught her, a craft she can carry, a method of attention, and a role waiting that does not depend on palace rank.

The part of us an institution cannot convert is rarely something we manufacture in solitude. We bring it from elsewhere, and that elsewhere usually contains other people.

This is why Maomao’s resistance should not be credited to willpower alone. She did not enter empty-handed.

What a person is able to carry

The reverse is painful. A girl sent into the palace very young may have had no chance to acquire a craft or relation that the palace cannot price. A noble daughter raised entirely for the correct marriage may arrive with many accomplishments, but all of them already speak the institution’s language.

The difference between Maomao and such a woman is not simply character. It is luggage.

People do not choose with equal inventories. Before independence can appear as a virtue, someone often has to have supplied the material from which it can be practiced: knowledge, trust, a name, a trade, a room where failure did not lead to expulsion.

The source is compromised too

This would be a comforting argument if the pleasure district were a sanctuary. It is not. The Verdigris House buys and sells women, ranks their bodies, profits from their labor, and discards those whose health or market value collapses. Maomao’s older-sister figures live within those terms.

Luomen’s pharmacy exists there. Maomao grows up there. The place that gives her what the palace cannot convert is itself an institution built on conversion.

That contradiction does not cancel the argument. It prepares its most difficult part. Before returning to it, the next essay looks at the man standing near the palace’s center: Jinshi, who possesses beauty, position, and authority—and no independent outside at all.
