He Has Everything Except an Outside

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

Jinshi looks like the person least in need of escape. He administers the rear palace, commands people and information, protects some lives and endangers others. His beauty is so effective that the anime treats it almost as a physical force: attendants blush, stagger, and sometimes faint when he turns on the smile.

He knows how to use the effect. Again and again, the face switches into its professional setting, a door opens, and the smile disappears. Jinshi calls this work.

Everyone around him treats him as an instrument, and he has learned to operate the instrument himself.

When every response is contaminated

The instrument’s efficiency hides a peculiar cost. Jinshi cannot tell how much of any response belongs to him.

Does an attendant help because she trusts him, because she fears his office, or because his appearance overwhelms her judgment? Is loyalty directed toward his person, his presumed status, or the rewards attached to proximity? The variables cannot be separated.

Other people’s reactions are one way we learn who we are. Jinshi receives reactions in abundance, but nearly all of them are contaminated by the same combination of beauty and power. He is surrounded by mirrors that return an image he did not choose and cannot test.

A life arranged before speech

His face is inherited. So is the deeper architecture of his life.

Jinshi was exchanged with another infant at birth through an arrangement made by Ah-Duo and the Empress Dowager. The women had intelligible reasons inside a dynastic order that gave them little room: a consort’s child and an empress’s child did not possess equal safety. Yet the cost of their solution fell on two people who could not consent to it.

Before Jinshi could speak, others had decided the identity from which every later option would be measured.

Take inventory. His beauty was given by birth. His public identity was assigned through an exchange. His office follows from that identity. The tool he uses most effectively is also the feature most relentlessly used by everyone else.

He owns extraordinary assets and cannot identify one as luggage he packed himself.

What he asks of Maomao

Jinshi’s fixation on Maomao does not need to begin as romance. She is the one person on whom his best instrument reliably fails.

He smiles; she recoils or begins thinking about something else. She sees an employer, a source of irritating assignments, or occasionally the route to an interesting problem. The joke repeats because Jinshi cannot believe the evidence. He increases the charm; the result remains stubbornly ordinary.

That ordinariness is precious. Maomao does not need his favor to define her future, so her response is less distorted by what he can grant. In a palace where nearly everyone reacts to the configuration called “Jinshi,” she produces a reaction not fully explained by the face, office, or presumed identity.

He is borrowing an outside from her.

She cannot give him a separate life. She can, however, supply one narrow relation in which the palace’s usual currency fails. Her indifference tells him something praise cannot: another person has encountered him without immediately turning him into what his position is for.

Power and the inability to leave

Ah-Duo leaves the rear palace for a detached residence. Her son occupies a higher place and cannot simply follow. He may command investigations and move other people, but his role is not a job from which one resigns. It is the answer the dynasty gives to the question of who he is.

This creates the series’ sharpest paradox. The source of Jinshi’s power is also the source of his inability to exit. The more consequential his position becomes, the less imaginable an unassigned life appears.

Later developments may complicate that claim; within the first forty-eight episodes, he repeatedly approaches disclosure and departure without completing either. Authority lets him open almost every door except one leading beyond the architecture that authorizes him.

Freckles and a smile

Maomao enters the palace and adds freckles so that attention will slide past her. Jinshi enters each working day and activates a smile so that attention will fasten onto him.

The gestures move in opposite directions, but both manage the same danger: in this place, other people’s sight assigns position. Maomao suppresses the image because she has a date. Jinshi intensifies the image because no date exists.

To understand why her outside works, however, we still have to look at it without romance. The place Maomao calls home is built around the sale of women. That is not a flaw to be edited out of the argument. It is the final test of it.
