What Value Is Not

Abstract

The word value is claimed at once by the market, by ethics, and by ordinary speech. One word carries at least three different things, so before it can be let into the framework the space it refers to has to be cleared.

The clearing is not done by arguing with anyone. It is done by showing, for each of five common misidentifications, the level or the category at which it sits askew: price, direction, a price set on the remainder, a ladder, and each-to-their-own. The essay carries one instrument with a positive shape — the solitary subject. The lowest condition for end-value to stand asks for no counterparty; price asks for at least two subjects and a common measure. Once the conditions under which two things exist part ways over the count of subjects, they are not two readings of one thing. They are two things.

The emblem of the series is an old story about a pearl and a casket. The five sections that follow clear, in fact, five caskets.

1. The Pearl and the Casket

There is an old story. A seller of pearls set a pearl into a casket wrought with the utmost craft — the wood precious, scented, inlaid with jade. The buyer paid, kept the casket, and returned the pearl.

Later ages laughed at that buyer. This series takes the story for its emblem, but what it takes is not the laughter.

The buyer had a ready ruler to hand. The worth of the wood, the strength of the scent, the fineness of the carving, the density of the inlay — all of it comparable, priceable, exchangeable. He could measure the casket.

The pearl was not on that ruler.

He did not fail to see the pearl. His ruler could not measure it, and so the thing it could not measure was returned as nothing.

The error of keeping the casket and returning the pearl is not in buying the casket. The casket truly has its craft, its price, its market. The error is in taking the priceable half for the whole of value and returning the half that cannot be priced. His problem was not that he bought a casket. It was that all he had in hand was a casket's ruler.

The five sections below clear five caskets.

2. The First Casket: Price

Price is the most common and the most forceful misreading of value.

The force is earned. Of all the ways of speaking about value, price is the one most open to operation: it can be measured, compared, entered in a ledger, forecast. A measurable reading expands of its own accord into the immeasurable, and so what is this worth is heard, in ordinary speech, almost always as what does this cost. The more a market succeeds, the more this hearing looks like the only one.

This section does not deny that price is real. It only moves price out of the answer-place of what value is.

First a boundary of usage. By price is meant the market reading of exchange, conversion, and common measure. A solitary person can still weigh two of their own uses against each other, reckon the cost of a trade-off, set scarcity in an order of precedence — those are their own reckonings, and they are not price. Price asks for more than a calculation. It asks for a counterparty.

Consider where each thing that makes price price actually happens. Exchange asks for a ceding end and a receiving end. Comparison asks for a common measure, and a measure becomes common only when at least two subjects grant it. Conversion, summation, quotation, bargaining — every one of these motions presupposes a market, and a market is at fewest two subjects. What price reads is not a thing in itself but the position of a thing within a many-subject structure of exchange.

Now lower the count of subjects to one.

Imagine the first and only subject in a universe. It has no second end to exchange with, no second subject to grant a shared measure. Price on it is not equal to zero — it has no domain of definition. The function price takes no value on a single subject.

And value stays whole. That solitary subject still lives inside the difference between good and bad, still keeps to its own bounds, still sets its own ends. It has its own value, and it has no price of its own.

This is no figure of speech but a parting of the conditions of existence. For value to stand asks for one subject and its own law. For price to stand asks for at least two subjects and a common measure. Once the conditions under which two concepts exist part ways over the count of subjects, they are not two readings of one thing but two things.

Once parted, each side keeps its place. Price is not thereby made false: the market is a real structure, price is a real reading, there is a real loss when end-value is coded into price, and measuring that loss is the work of the Economics papers. And value is not thereby made mysterious: it simply does not stand within the domain of price.

Two directions of overreach are the only things to guard against. In one, price swallows value: whatever cannot be priced is without value — and then the universe of the solitary subject becomes a universe without value, a conclusion enough to bring the path down. In the other, value swallows price: the market reading is judged a fallen form of value, and trade a profanation of ends. Neither is taken here.

3. The Second Casket: Direction

Power Theory set down a line: value lies in the direction and not in the remainder.

That line is true within Power Theory. But the value in it means direction-value, which is a distinct sense from this series' end-value. Two senses sharing one word is the second most common source of misreading in the discussion of value.

Direction-value is an orientation-reading of a single transformation. An exercise that loosens the other's lattice, opening new dimensions with no old source demeaned, is cultivation. An exercise that locks the other's lattice, cutting away workable dimensions, is severing.

What matters is this: direction-value appraises the transformation itself, whether it opens dimension or closes it. It does not appraise the subjects at either end, does not appraise their value-sources, and least of all ranks the two ends. Good and ill fall to the account of the transformation, not to the account of persons.

Mix the two senses and a class of sentences appears at once. The cultivated one's value has risen and the severed one's has fallen; whoever cultivates is worth more than whoever severs; a person inside a relation full of cultivation is worth more than a person inside a relation full of severing.

Such sentences enter the reading of a transformation into the account of subject-standing. The error is one of category: the domain of direction-value is transformations, the domain of end-value is subjects. A transformation may be judged benign or ill, and the standing of the subjects at either end, as ends, is not increased or decreased by a hair. The severed person's situation has worsened and their workable dimensions have thinned — those are real losses. But their value as an end has not been marked down.

And there is a turn here worth pausing on. It is precisely because end-value is not marked down by severing that severing is the kind of thing that has to be judged ill. If severing really could reduce the other's value, then severing would be a repricing — and repricing belongs to the sense cut away in the section before.

4. The Third Casket: A Price on the Remainder

Power Theory set down that the remainder has no price. Rights Theory set a lock in the same place: to imagine the remainder as a treasure hidden at the innermost layer, once the dimensions are peeled away, is to misread a dynamic operational term as a pearl.

This series takes the pearl as its marker precisely in order to tighten that lock, not to loosen it.

Setting a price on the remainder commits two errors in one motion.

The first is substantialization. The remainder is not a possessable thing. Whoever cups it as a treasure has already made a specimen of a dynamic operational term.

The second is pricing. The motion of pricing belongs to the first casket — all pricing presupposes a common measure and a market, and the remainder is exactly the place no measure exhausts.

The two errors often conspire into a third saying: the remainder has no price, therefore the remainder's price is infinitely high.

That saying sounds like elevation and is in fact demolition. An infinitely high price is still a price, still inside the domain of pricing, still waiting for a large enough bid to redeem it. Pricelessness is not the maximum of price. It is being outside the domain of pricing. To render the unpriceable as beyond all price is the most common way this kind of talk pulls its own house down.

5. The Fourth Casket: The Ladder

Value-sources differ with a subject's structural level — that is the figure this series will raise on the positive side. But differ with level is most easily heard as rise with level.

As though there were a ladder of value: the lower levels' sources are elementary value, the higher levels' are advanced value, the subject climbs, value mounts rung by rung, and the top rung caps it. There is a popular figure that draws needs as a pyramid, subsistence at the base and self-realization at the peak, the life at the apex worth more than the life at the bottom.

That figure has to come down.

The ladder confuses two orders. What a level gives is a position of generation: which structure appears first and which after. This order is real, an order of construction, and it is not denied. What it does not give is a rank of value.

A subject that unfolds a new level has only gained workable structural dimensions. It is not thereby worth more than its earlier self, and still less worth more than another subject who has stayed at the earlier level. A new level's source is an addition, not a replacement — the higher level keeps and re-places the lower sources, and no level's source is voided or marked down in the ascent.

The ladder has a more hidden version, too: it ranks not levels but directions. It grants that each level's sources are true in their own right, and then says that upward movement itself proves the upper worth more, that the existence of a direction is the existence of a rank.

Half of that version was already cut in the section before: the reading of a direction appraises the transformation, not the two ends. A dimension-opening exercise judged benign does not make the end it opens onto worth more.

6. The Fifth Casket: Each to Their Own

Take the ladder down and the nearest pit is in the reverse direction.

If there is no rank of value, no outside measure standing over all subjects, then is not anything one says as good as anything else? Every one a measure, all measures equal, value become each-to-their-own, whatever a subject declares valuable at this moment being valuable by that declaration.

This reading hears unranked as unstructured, and the two are a whole series apart.

What was deleted is only the outside lateral measure — that ruler standing over the law of every subject, by which subjects might be ranked against one another. To delete this ruler is to delete the instrument of ranking, not the structure itself.

Not one piece of structure was deleted. A value-source is not something a subject declares offhand; it is given with the subject's structural level. What a subject happens to like at this moment is a particular preference. A preference can be wrong, can change, can be hijacked; it does not by that fact become the subject's value-source. To equate preference straightway with value is the first step down the each-to-their-own path, and the easiest door for an outside end to walk through.

Beyond structure, each-to-their-own misses a second thing: it reads the inner as an island. Since value is each subject's own, between subjects there is only talking to oneself.

One's own law has already furnished the counter-example. Every subject's law is laid down by that subject itself, and no one can exhaustively read or write another's law — yet law and law recognize each other in form, the same internal double-negation recurring in every self-legislating subject.

Value is isomorphic with law. Each subject's value-source is given out of its own structure, and precisely because the same structure recurs from subject to subject, the values each gives out can resonate.

Resonance is not a common measure: a measure ranks, resonance recognizes. When two subjects, each giving out its own value from its own law, meet, they need no shared ruler to translate.

But isomorphism yields only the possibility of recognition. It does not guarantee that the content is the same, nor that recognition in fact occurs. And resonance is not a condition for value to stand: a value with which no one resonates is not for that reason demoted — the first casket's criterion holds the floor here, for what resonates is already whole in the solitary subject.

There is a fine but load-bearing distinction here: resonance only occurs with the arrival of a second subject, whereas price is constituted by the second subject. The one is a trigger, the other a constitution. That is the line between resonance and price.

So the governing proposition of this series is a line that bites at both ends: it has structure, and admits no ranking.

Against the ladder it says: no ranking. Against each-to-their-own it says: it has structure. Each error holds one end, and the proposition stands in the middle.

And the cost of admitting no ranking is not the loss of structure — it is those two paths themselves that lose structure. The ladder trades away the true sources of the levels for a false ruler. Each-to-their-own, in the pose of abolishing all rulers, abolishes the difference between source and preference, and miscounts the resonance between subjects as impossible. Neither price is paid here.

7. The Useless Is Not the Worthless

There is an old strand of teaching that seats the highest place in the useless: what enters no use is thereby preserved whole. The use of the useless is the great use.

This strand collides, on the surface, with the ground of this series. The root of the series is self as an end — to set up an end on one hand and exalt the non-end on the other looks like working at cross purposes.

Take them apart and there is no collision.

Useless says: not used up as a means — not conscripted to the end by any purpose-loop, not exhausted by any inventory of uses. Self as an end says: not reduced — the subject not degraded to a bare means.

The two are not one proposition. They meet only on the one face of anti-instrumentalization, the one speaking from not exhausted by another's uses, the other from itself being an end.

For a bearer, to keep from being used up as a means is exactly to keep the place of an end. A bearer may enter another's purpose-loop, may help others get things done, may take on a role of office or of care, and still not forfeit its place as an end — so long as it has not been reduced to a bare means, and its first-person positions of avowal, revision, and exit have not been cancelled.

The divide is not in whether one is of use to another, but in whether that use issues from one's own law. Devotion runs from within outward, one's own end unfolding toward the world. A subject that trades of its own motion has its own end taking the market as a tool, and price has not climbed into the site where its value comes to be. Both of these are still one's own end.

What is reduced to a bare means is another case: an outside inventory of uses has written one's value in one's stead.

A subject that takes another's inventory of uses to avow its own value has already had the site of its value's occurrence occupied by that inventory, so that thereafter, looking at itself, it sees first only a usable self. The use of the useless keeps exactly this site from being moved into — readings of use may come and go, and who gives the value does not change hands.

But this strand carries a slope of its own, to be locked here in the same breath: erecting the useless itself as a higher value, as though the less useful were the nobler, use vulgar and uselessness refined.

That is again to erect a ruler. The ladder the fourth casket took down is set back up facing the other way, the apex changing occupants, the tower the same tower.

This series takes the single sense of keeping-the-place: the use of the useless keeps the place of an end; it is not a ranking of uselessness.

8. Two Locks

The emblem takes two locks. Without them the emblem would itself become a sixth casket.

The first: the pearl is a structural place, not a substance.

The pearl means end-value, the standing of a subject as an end. It is not a treasure inside the subject's body. Rights Theory's lock bears repeating in this very place: to misread a dynamic operational term as a pearl is the error of substantialization.

That this series dares take the pearl for its marker rests precisely on setting this lock first upon the marker itself.

The second: pearl and casket divide only reference, not rank.

The casket has its structural function and its legitimacy. The market is a real structure, price a real reading, the craftsman's skill a real skill. The motion of this series is to tell pearl from casket, not to discard the casket and seize the pearl.

Once more, then, on the buyer's error: it was not that he bought the casket; it was that all he had in hand was a casket's ruler.

Return finally to the solitary subject and look at the pair of emblems once more. There is no market there, no buying and selling, no going rate for boxes — the casket has no object. The pearl is there still: that one subject is an end just the same, and has its own value just the same.

The casket arrives with the second subject. The pearl arrives with no one. It was already there.

9. The Table of Three Senses

With the five caskets cleared, the space to which the word value refers inside the framework can be gathered into a table.

SenseWhat it refers toCondition of existenceWhere it belongs
PriceThe market reading of exchange and comparisonAt least two subjects and a common measureSAE Economics
Direction-valueThe orientation-reading of a transformation (cultivation / severing)A relation of exercise between subjectsPower Theory
End-valueA bearer's standing as an end; one's own valueOne bearer, no counterparty requiredValue Theory

Each of the three senses is true, each has its domain, each has where it belongs. Confuse any two and you fall back into one of the caskets.

The sole object of this series is the third row.

10. After the Clearing

The prequel's work ends here.

What it has not done should be said plainly. It has built no positive machinery. Who bears end-value, how sources are given with level, how the value axis and the dynamic axis stand side by side without trespassing — none of that is here. Not one numbered proposition has been set.

It has only cleared the space to which the word value refers, and drawn the boundary of that space with the closing table.

But a clearing cannot be carried out in a complete positive vacuum. So it has borrowed three minimal boundary commitments: that end-value does not take a relation of exchange as its source; that value-standing is not ranked by any common outside measure; and that a particular preference is not by that fact a source of value. The burden of proving all three rests with what follows. Where the island-reading was refuted, one further minimal positive shape was borrowed — resonance — whose full portrait is also held for later.

The rest is the work of the papers to come: how value appears, how it is avowed in the first person, how it is socially recognized; how an outside end takes the site, is introjected, locks in; how value stabilizes, decays, shifts, recurs; how action is adjudicated when incommensurable structures of value meet; and why another's value cannot be exhaustively read, cannot be compared by an outside measure, cannot be merged — and how resonance happens exactly within those three limits.

The space of reference is cleared. The stakes are left for the papers that follow to drive.
