If Everything Interpenetrates, Is There Still an Other?
Huayan's most compelling image is Indra's net. Countless jewels reflect one another. Each jewel contains the reflections of all the others, and within every reflected jewel the entire net appears again, without end.
The image is often reduced to “everything is connected.” That is far too weak. Networked nodes can exchange information while remaining delayed, partial, and opaque. Indra's net makes a stronger claim: every phenomenon is present through all the others. One and many remain distinct, yet their distinction no longer functions as obstruction.
Placed beside SAE, the interesting point is not that both philosophies value relation. It is a sharper question: must a complete relation preserve an other that cannot be included from my side?
Where the Five Teachings Diverge
Huayan's five teachings—the lesser vehicle, the initial, final, sudden, and perfect Mahāyāna teachings—classify depth of doctrine. They are not a chronology and not a universal scale for ranking persons. Any interface with the DD sequence must therefore remain non-strict.
On such a reading, the self-liberative orientation of the first teaching spans the emergence of 13DD, the self, and 14DD, the self as an end. The initial Mahāyāna teaching loosens attachment to intrinsic nature but has not yet stabilized a turn toward a concrete other. The final teaching opens Buddha-nature and the possibility of awakening for all beings. The sudden teaching interrupts attachment to language and stages. The perfect teaching enters the relational domain at and beyond 15DD, the self-legislating subject.
The divergence occurs precisely at the top. The perfect teaching cannot simply be labeled 16DD. Both frameworks have moved beyond the subject organized only around its own end. Both describe an advanced relation among subjects. But Huayan completes that relation through unobstructed interpenetration, while SAE completes it through mutual non-doubt that still preserves the other's inexhaustibility.
This is not a difference in rank. It is a difference in terminal topology.
No Outside, and an Outside without External Force
Huayan dependent arising contains no first cause standing outside the dharma-realm to initiate the ten thousand things. Phenomena arise through the one true dharma-realm and through nature, within a whole that has no external remainder. “No beginning” here does not mean lack of ground. It means no external initiator. Huayan begins from a plenitude of presence and can positively articulate a perfect culmination.
SAE moves almost in reverse. It has a formal starting point—Negativa, negation prior to being—and constructs upward through directed layers. It has no closed terminus. Every construct leaves remainder outside itself, and 16DD is a relational limit that no side can occupy alone. Its ground has the character of negation rather than an already present whole.
The frameworks therefore form two counter-signs. Huayan has no external first cause and has an articulable highest completion. SAE has a formal beginning and no globally closed end. Huayan takes fullness as ground; SAE takes negation as ground. Neither is an unfinished version of the other.
Does Interpenetration Mean Mutual Understanding?
SAE's recognition of another as an end does not imply knowledge of that other's purposes. At 15DD the subject can register that another source of ends is present. But simulation borrows one's own 14DD as a template. However refined the model becomes, it should know that it reaches a structural marker, not the other's content from within.
Mutual non-doubt at 16DD does not make two subjects transparent. The opposite follows. Because each recognizes the other as a true subject, an aspect of the other remains unavailable to unilateral possession. “I understand you completely” is often the sentence by which a subject is reduced again to an object inside someone else's model.
Huayan answers from another direction. Unobstructed interpenetration is not one party's mental representation of another. It is the full appearing of each phenomenon through the whole. Difference remains: one is not many, whole is not part. Yet one and many, whole and part, no longer block one another. Completion is achieved not by preserving an outside but by excluding nothing from relation.
The central seam can therefore be stated simply. Huayan completes otherness through total interpenetration. SAE completes otherness by refusing total inclusion. Huayan suspects externality of retaining obstruction. SAE suspects the abolition of externality of abolishing the true other.
Indra's Net Matches Only Halfway
SAE can certainly draw networks. Subjects act on one another; relations feed back into nodes; each encounter changes the conditions of future encounters. The form of a net is a legitimate partial interface.
The correspondence breaks at infinite mutual reflection. Reflexivity in SAE is bounded. Every model a node forms of the network is a construct and therefore occludes. Marking that occlusion creates another construct with another remainder. Reflexivity can deepen indefinitely, but no node internalizes the whole network without loss.
Huayan should therefore not be redescribed as a “topology of remainder.” In SAE, remainder is exactly what no achieved whole has included. Huayan retains difference within a whole without outside. Both reject the finality of a local description, but they locate overflow differently. In Huayan, recontextualization remains internal to the whole. In SAE, overflow appears as a remainder external to every claimed whole.
Two Opposed Risks
Huayan can ask SAE why true subjectivity must require non-inclusion. Could there be another complete form of relation in which differences remain while all obstruction disappears? Is externality genuinely necessary, or merely SAE's preference for one relational topology?
SAE can ask Huayan how a concrete interpreter avoids speaking for another node in the name of the whole. How does “I see your meaning from the standpoint of totality” differ from imposing my image of totality upon you?
Each tradition has an internal defense. Huayan's harmony of the six characteristics preserves whole and part, identity and difference, formation and dissolution together; one node does not swallow the rest. SAE's conservation of remainder treats externality not as failed relation but as the condition under which a subject is not possessed. Yet each defense depends on its own axiom and cannot compel the other side.
The title's question remains. If everything interpenetrates, is there still an other?
Huayan answers that interpenetration does not erase the other. It allows every other to enter the unobstructed whole in its own difference. SAE answers that without something unavailable to unilateral inclusion, it cannot distinguish a true subject from an extraordinarily rich object-model.
Neither answer is a fragment. They are two complete philosophies of relational completion: one dissolves outside into unobstructed interpenetration; the other preserves outside as non-possession. An interface should not close that seam. It should show why the world does not need only one meaning of “complete.”
