Where Can Other-Power Enter?

Han Qin (秦汉)

The first five encounters in this series differ radically, yet they share a quiet assumption: transformation occurs on the subject's side. Yogācāra transforms the basis, Chan breaks abiding, Madhyamaka loosens grasping at intrinsic nature, Tiantai adapts teaching to capacity, and Huayan enters the dharma-realm. External conditions may help, but the subject's structure undergoes the decisive change.

Pure Land reverses that assumption.

On a strong Shandao-lineage reading, the ordinary being cannot escape birth and death through self-power. The force that accomplishes crosswise transcendence is not an accumulated capacity of the practitioner but the other-power of Amitābha's Primal Vow. Faith, aspiration, and recitation are acts of the practitioner. The power of the crossing does not belong to those acts.

Pure Land therefore meets SAE on an axis that the previous five essays never had to isolate: the source of accomplishment.

Vertical Ascent and Crosswise Transcendence

Nāgārjuna's Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā distinguishes a difficult and an easy path to non-retrogression. Tanluan stabilizes this difference through self-power and other-power; later formulations distinguish the Gate of the Sages from the Pure Land gate. The difficult path is compared to walking overland. The easy path resembles being carried by boat.

Placed in an SAE coordinate, the Gate of the Sages shares a formal direction with the DD ladder: bottom-up, layered, and self-chiseled, each construct emerging through negation of a prior construct. This is an analogy of operational type, not a claim that Buddhist stages correspond rung by rung to DD levels.

Pure Land is not a shorter route up the same ladder. Crosswise transcendence is not assisted climbing. The source of the force lies outside the ladder, so the accounting of successive rungs no longer governs the passage. To explain other-power as unusually powerful SAE cultivation would already convert Pure Land into a self-power theory.

Why Cultivation Is Not Other-Power

Cultivation is the strongest SAE near-neighbor to other-power. A teacher, relationship, institution, or ritual can alter what a subject can perceive and bear. It can provide a bridge that did not previously exist.

But cultivation changes conditions; it does not construct on another's behalf. Someone else may build the bridge, but the subject still crosses. Successful cultivation increases the other's capacity for self-chiseling and ends by making the external regulator unnecessary.

Other-power occupies a different position. It does not merely improve the conditions of passage. It assigns the passage itself to the Vow. The practitioner recites, but rebirth is not the product of merit accumulated by recitation as a self-powered technique. Pure Land does not offer a better bridge. Vow-power carries the practitioner across.

The difference is therefore not whether help comes from outside. It is where help acts. Cultivation helps at the level of conditions while accomplishment remains with the subject. Other-power acts at the level of accomplishment itself.

The Act Is Not the Crossing

Pure Land is not simple passivity. The three minds, the five gates of mindfulness, aspiration, and recitation are activities. Yet activity and accomplishment belong to different domains.

Reciting “Namo Amitābha Buddha” can be read differently by the two frameworks. SAE registers recitation as a subject-side operation: attention changes, habit is reorganized, and a new construct forms. Pure Land can read the same recitation as reception—not merit-producing self-construction, but participation in the power of the Name and the Vow.

The readings cannot be combined as “I self-chisel ninety percent and the Buddha supplies the final ten.” That would turn Pure Land into an incomplete SAE. Recitation is complete in both frameworks: a complete self-chiseling operation for SAE and a complete act of reception for Pure Land. The divergence lies not in the observable event but in the source of its efficacy.

The promise of rebirth through ten recitations sharpens the problem. With the dying ordinary being's own accumulated capacity reduced almost to nothing, other-power becomes maximally visible. Yet from SAE's perspective, even one recitation is an event on the subject's side and can therefore be registered as a construct. The more Pure Land insists that the crossing is not self-accomplished, the more clearly SAE encounters its limit of representation.

Why SAE Cannot Represent Pure Reception

SAE contains a strong genetic commitment. Anything registered as a state of a subject is a construct. Every construct emerges from a previous structure through negation and self-chiseling. External relations can alter conditions, but they cannot complete inside the subject a construct with no subject-side genesis.

Pure reception by which an external power accomplishes the crossing therefore has no SAE position. If reception can be described as a state of the subject, it is already a construct. If it is a construct, it is not zero self-power.

This is not a missing term that future SAE vocabulary can easily supply. It is an axiomatic burden. Adding an “other-power layer” would alter the genesis of the entire chisel-construct cycle. Conversely, Pure Land cannot reduce the Primal Vow to an unusually effective psychological process within the practitioner. That would reclaim salvation for self-power.

The frameworks must part here.

When Inability Becomes the Entrance

Shandao's twofold deep faith holds together conviction that one is an ordinary being unable to escape birth and death and conviction that Amitābha's Vow receives beings. “Cannot” is not merely insufficient training. It is the entrance to the structure of other-power. The inability of self-power is precisely what makes reception of the Vow the real direction.

SAE also begins many transitions from a cannot: a construct cannot close without remainder, so remainder becomes the bridge to another chisel. The resemblance is formal and limited. Pure Land concerns the ordinary being's inability to accomplish liberation. SAE concerns the inability of any construct to exhaust what it occludes. The former turns inability toward external Vow-power; the latter turns it toward further self-chiseling. Translating the sinful ordinary being as “a subject with a great deal of remainder” would distort both traditions.

Each can now ask the other a serious question. Pure Land asks whether SAE, by requiring all transformation to be self-chiseled, excludes in advance the complete possibility of unconditional reception. SAE asks how a reception with no subject-side point of genesis can be registered as an event at all—especially when even faith is said to be transferred through the Vow.

Both questions are valid. Each is valid within its own framework.

Two Completions, Not One Theory Missing Two Steps

Pure Land is not SAE with insufficient self-power. SAE is not Pure Land before it learns to trust the Vow. Pure Land is complete in other-power and crosswise transcendence: the practitioner acts, the Vow accomplishes passage, and the terminus is a recompense land toward which one can be born. SAE is complete in ascent without external force: every construct self-chisels, and even 16DD is not a place into which anyone can be carried but a relational limit no side occupies alone.

The preceding Huayan essay described a whole without outside. SAE preserves an outside without force: remainder remains external but accomplishes nothing for the subject. Pure Land affirms an outside with force: the Vow is external to the practitioner and can accomplish the crossing. These positions cannot be collapsed.

Where can other-power enter? In Pure Land it enters from the Primal Vow, and its external source is precisely what makes it salvific. In SAE it has no point of entry. Whatever enters a subject's state has become construct, and every construct must self-chisel.

The seam need not be repaired. It allows each philosophy to state what it cannot surrender. One says that there is an accomplishment I do not accomplish. The other says that whatever is accomplished here cannot occur without my construction. Standing face to face, they suggest that “human subjectivity” may admit more than one complete interpretation from the beginning.
