This series re-reads American constitutional history through the chisel-construct cycle — from Washington's first inauguration in 1789 through the Supreme Court-adjudicated election of 2000.

The framework's core claim: every political order is a construct built in response to a chisel — the fracture of an earlier order. Constructs have what they can do and what they cannot. What they cannot do generates remainders. Remainders do not disappear; they accumulate and eventually produce the next chisel.

The American structure occupies a distinctive position within this framework. What Madison's generation built was institutionalized political pessimism — they took the indestructibility of remainder as their founding premise. This is the first structure in human history built explicitly on the acknowledgment of remainder. These twenty-six essays are honest testimony to two centuries of that structure in operation.

Each essay has an independent English version — not a translation, but a parallel essay written directly in English.
