First establish the question

This is an optional theoretical deep dive, not a required extra step in the main argument. The preceding essays ask how accumulated capital, fame, status, and credentials become power in decisions affecting others. Their orientation is to restrain accumulation’s uses rather than reduce accumulation as an end in itself. Accumulation must not purchase control over foundational standing or the power to close questioning, and those imposing restraints must remain answerable. Reading the history of political thought is not a prerequisite for understanding that claim.

The project is not a theory of prices or the origin of value, a complete account of distributive justice, a tax schedule, or a corporate governance blueprint. These limits do not make the neighboring questions unimportant. In particular, declining to make reduction of accumulation the objective does not establish that every tax is illegitimate or that inequality is irrelevant. The deliberately narrower question concerns what an accumulated position does to particular people and how institutions should respond.

Comparison also needs evidential discipline. The original paper checked relevant passages in Smith and Kant; quotations from Marx, Hayek, and Friedman were checked with edition or location qualifications. Khan’s comparison rests on an abstract, while Hirschman’s passages and page references come through another paper. Other authors enter through secondary accounts only. The objections below are reconstructed challenges, not invented quotations. Similarities do not turn earlier thinkers into SAE in advance.

Two questions help organize the conversation without classifying every thinker. Does the inquiry concern holdings and distribution, or uses and conversions? Does a boundary derive from efficiency, dispersed knowledge, public interest, or the standing of persons and the structure of their available routes? These are reading aids, not an exhaustive map of political thought.

Smith: purchasing power is not automatically political power

In The Wealth of Nations, Smith distinguishes the purchasing capacity wealth directly supplies from political power that does not necessarily follow possession. SAE adds a normative barrier at that distinction: wealth may buy many opportunities, but not the authority to close scrutiny of itself. Smith’s suspicion of commercial regulations proposed by dealers, and his opposition to laws facilitating their collusion, connect with that concern. Neither passage establishes that he already endorsed SAE’s particular boundaries.

There are differences of measure and object. The cited passages examine a commercial order through public interest; SAE examines operations affecting particular people without assigning an enduring verdict to a class. A strong reconstructed objection is that transaction-by-transaction scrutiny costs too much: why not protect competition? Competition is indeed a restraint. But it does not immediately answer someone who lacks an affordable alternative to essential water, and scrutiny cannot stop at legislative proposals while ignoring an ordinary service cutoff.

The Theory of Moral Sentiments adds three neighboring concerns: receiving praise differs from deserving it; admiration of wealth can corrupt judgment; and society’s members are not chess pieces moved solely by a planner. These connect with distinctions between fame and reputation, wealth and deserved esteem, and support and authored lives. Their grounds remain different. An impartial spectator is not SAE’s recognition relation, and Smith’s insistence that each person has a principle of motion does not reject all systematic institutional design.

Kant: reject paternalism, and reject an independence test for voting

Kant’s objection to paternal government denies that benevolent intentions authorize rulers to decide their subjects’ happiness. SAE likewise denies that helping someone grants jurisdiction over their purpose. But Kant’s passage concerns a constitutional arrangement making subjects comprehensively passive. A foundation offering three courses, with the actual affordability of withdrawal unresolved, cannot simply be equated with that structure. Benevolence does not certify freedom; a limited menu does not by itself establish despotism.

A second comparison yields an explicit disagreement. Kant makes economic independence a condition of active citizenship. The property that can sustain a person includes skills, crafts, and learning, so this is not merely a test of being rich. Nevertheless, people dependent on another’s arrangements for their maintenance do not have the same legislative standing in that distinction. SAE rejects the independence condition: voting eligibility belongs to the foundational layer, not to economic success, occupational standing, or accumulated wealth.

The reason concerns reciprocal recognition among members who legislate together. Their decisions bind members, including dissenters. Excluding some through their economic position leaves them bound without the corresponding legislative standing. It also converts developmental standing into a foundational entitlement. Defining membership is a separate task. The claim here is that, within the membership, economic dependence does not first remove a person’s vote.

Nor may accumulation directly purchase entry into collective legislative standing. Investment that actually creates conditions for other people's development, such as employment, may be considered through membership procedures as one possible route. Its ground is the conditions provided, not the money itself or elapsed time. Capital plus waiting does not automatically produce membership. Other ways of enabling people deserve consideration on the same ground, with concrete conditions still requiring institutional specification.

The strongest reconstructed objection is serious: a worker fearing dismissal may vote as an employer wishes, effectively giving the employer another vote. That identifies a route through which dependence becomes political control. It does not justify penalizing the dependent person. The response should secure subsistence, refusal, questioning, and protection from retaliation—not withhold participation until independence has been achieved. The precise enforcement arrangements remain unfinished rather than supplied by this principle alone.

Marx and Hayek: relations and knowledge are different grounds

Marx’s colonial example explains capital as a relationship among persons mediated by things, not an isolated stock of objects. SAE likewise does not treat money or machinery as inherently carrying power. It asks how socially sustained possession and decision positions operate. The emphasis then differs: the cited Marx passage concerns production relations, while SAE examines recognition, institutional registration, and actual control of accumulation, including credentials, ratings, and reputational gates. The claim that capital is not a thing is not a refutation of Marx.

A reconstructed objection asks whether recognition turns material domination into a mental problem, as if refusing to acknowledge ownership could undo control. It does not. Registration here is an institutionally supported structural fact, not a thought in one person’s head. Housing, advances, and a noncompete can together block departure whether the worker endorses the arrangement or not. Broadening the sites under examination does not dissolve control of productive resources into a misunderstanding.

Hayek stresses knowledge of particular circumstances dispersed among individuals. This challenges a single center’s ability to select everybody’s path, but does not endorse any particular Bluekiln subsidy. SAE adds a distinct normative reason: even superior knowledge about a risk does not grant ownership of another person’s direction. How much an institution knows and what it is authorized to decide are separate questions.

The objection is that dispersed knowledge supplies an empirical argument, while ownership of purpose is an ethical commitment: why replace the former? SAE does not replace it. Experts may know technical risks better while individuals retain local knowledge; both can be true. Even if one information gap narrows, authority over the person’s ends does not automatically appear. That additional step openly rests on persons as ends in themselves, not on a claim to have deduced ethics from an empirical fact.

Friedman, Khan, and Hirschman: profit, platforms, and exit

Friedman does not present profit as unlimited. His argument requires pursuit of profit within society’s basic rules, including law and ethical custom. SAE agrees that returns cannot occupy an unbounded position. The disagreement concerns the source of the boundary: present legality does not establish that an arrangement leaves people’s routes intact. Making return the sole objective is a signal for investigation, not a conviction based on wording alone. What matters is whether it actually overrides boundaries, questioning, or redirection.

A strong reconstructed challenge says demands beyond profit let managers spend shareholders’ money on unauthorized social aims. SAE’s answer is not to license managerial philanthropy. It places requirements on the organization and responsibilities on its positions: do not cross the boundary, and remain answerable. Respect for affected persons is not a charitable project the manager may arbitrarily choose. This supplies a normative constraint, not a complete specification of board powers and shareholder relations.

Khan’s argument about platform power contests a framework focused on short-term price effects. Integration across business lines can place infrastructure needed by competitors under a platform’s control. The fictional Crossways marketplace illustrates a neighboring structure: an operator provides the trading environment while competing inside it. Cheap products do not answer who controls ranking, logistics, and settlement. SAE therefore considers depth of influence, dependence, numbers affected, and the cost of leaving, rather than a single asset or price measure.

The original paper checked Khan’s abstract, not the full argument. It cannot establish agreement on divestiture, common-carrier obligations, or another particular instrument. The challenge that enforcement needs a workable measure has real force: SAE supplies no common score for all power positions. It offers inspectable dimensions and leaves legal standards and instruments to concrete rules. That is a limited contribution, not an enforcement system ready for use.

Hirschman’s distinction between exit and voice concerns responses to organizational deterioration. SAE adds an economic-side question: even a well-performing organization must leave routes to departure and challenge open. Exit is a structural channel, not merely a device for recovering performance. A legal right to leave may be unaffordable in subsistence terms. Where exit is nearly impossible, telling members they can go is particularly inadequate as an answer to demands for accountability. The textual comparison here remains explicitly indirect.

Where the sources stop, leave questions open

Secondary accounts suggest further contacts: Hegel on wealth and poverty; Polanyi and Thompson on markets and subsistence; Berle and Means on ownership separated from control; Coase on the formation of firms; Galbraith on countervailing power; and Anderson on employer domination. They open useful questions. They do not, without checking the relevant primary texts, establish exactly where each thinker agrees with or differs from SAE.

The same restraint applies to Nozick on the history of holdings, Walzer on spheres, Sandel on market boundaries, accounts of sufficiency associated with Frankfurt, and Piketty and Robeyns on concentration and inequality. None should be reduced to scenery for SAE’s preferred conclusion. It is unwarranted to say they care only about distribution and not use. A secondary account of a family of theories also cannot simply be attributed to one author. Leaving taxes and distribution outside this inquiry does not deny their independent grounds.

The comparison must also account for unfinished work. On repairing economic institutions, this series supplies normative boundaries and hands concrete legal and governance design onward. On an economics not making return its final standard, it completes only part of the normative task, not an entire alternative discipline. Its discussion of reputation examines the use of ratings and records as gates. How a reputation-holder exercises their position belongs with the theory of power; the formation of reputation in an ideal community remains with the moral-law discussion.

Outstanding questions include a common measure of power, identifying when return actually becomes the overriding objective, specifying essential supply and affordable alternatives, proportional public assistance, and protecting dependent people’s participation from retaliation. Two further questions become clearer through comparison: how spontaneously arising countervailing powers should themselves be answerable, and how overall benefits relate to boundaries protecting particular people when an arrangement helps many but closes a few people’s routes. These are research tasks, not disguised completed answers.

The thinkers discussed are interlocutors, not premises of SAE and not opponents waiting to be declared obsolete. Comparison earns its place by clarifying grounds, scope, and remaining work. The main orientation stays with particular people: accumulation may develop, foundational standing is not earned through success, the uses of power remain constrained, and those imposing constraints must not acquire a final power to close the door.
