In 1820 the extended family gathers at Bald Hills. Natasha emerges from the nursery delighted by the color of a baby’s diaper. She is broader, careless of dress, no longer sings, and has devoted herself to children and Pierre. Tolstoy praises the transformation, describing her as a strong maternal creature and celebrating her demand for Pierre’s whole self.
Two readings remain possible. Natasha may have found what she wants and pursued it without concern for spectators. Or the qualities that once belonged uniquely to her—voice, vitality, dance—may have been translated into a ready-made social function. Tolstoy endorses the first; his material also supports the second.
Beside her stands Sonya. She renounced Nikolai, serves the household, and is neither mistreated nor needed. Marya calls her a flower without fruit. The novel offers little account of why sacrifice grants one woman fullness and leaves another socially superfluous.
Nikolai manages the estate successfully and earns the peasants’ respect. He also beats a village elder, knows Marya is right to condemn it, and knows he may do it again. The happiest domestic arrangement retains contradictions its members cannot explain away.
Pierre then describes a reformist political association in Petersburg. Nikolai declares that his oath would require him to march against it—even against Pierre. The argument ends unresolved. Five years later will come the Decembrist revolt. The novel stops before telling us where any of them would stand.
Andrei’s fifteen-year-old son Nikolenka listens unnoticed. That night he dreams of marching beside Pierre against an angry Nikolai while his formless father approves. He vows to do something that would satisfy Andrei. The first epilogue ends by opening a conflict inside the next generation.
Then Tolstoy sets the novel aside and argues directly that history is not moved by great men. What moves is the sum of innumerable individual wills. Borrowing calculus, he says historians must take the infinitesimal unit—the particular human being—and integrate rather than explain a continuous movement through a few famous points.
This is not necessarily the claim that individuals do not matter. It asks that every individual count, including those too small for chronicles to name. Power is a relation between the person who commands and all who interpret and obey; the higher the commander, the more transformations occur before an order becomes action.
Tolstoy closes by asking us to abandon the feeling of freedom for an unseen dependence, as astronomy once abandoned the feeling of an unmoving earth.
Yet more than a thousand pages have shown people choosing: Andrei lifting the standard, Marya keeping the pilgrim’s clothes but staying, Tushin firing without orders, Sonya writing her release, Pierre remaining in Moscow. The novel never narrates these decisions as empty illusions while they occur.
Its two endings therefore remain in productive tension. One household faces a future made by uncompleted choices. One treatise places every will inside necessity. Can the irreducible decision and the historical sum both be true? War and Peace ends not by solving that question but by making any simple answer answerable to the lives that preceded it.
