Reading War and Peace

Six essays on philanthropy that receives its own gratitude, a daughter kept by an unlocked door, Andrei’s accidental turns, command after action, the person within Pierre’s memory of Karataev, and Tolstoy’s two incompatible endings.

War and Peace repeatedly separates what people believe they direct from what their actions actually set in motion. It also refuses to leave life at the level of a historical theory. These essays move between estates, households, battlefields, prison columns, and the unresolved argument at the novel’s end.

Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, published in its familiar form between 1865 and 1869. Full-book spoilers.
