She Loved the Story

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, edited for textual and historical precision.

The de la Mole family preserves a sixteenth-century legend. Boniface de la Mole was executed for conspiracy; his lover, Marguerite of Navarre, is said to have received his severed head from the executioner and buried it herself. Every year on 30 April, Mathilde de la Mole wears mourning for the ancestor.

The story gives her not merely an image of love but a role. To occupy it, she will require a man capable of losing his head.

The boredom of a completed life

Mathilde is nineteen, rich, brilliantly placed, and surrounded by eligible men. Their politeness makes them interchangeable. Each speaks within the limits of his class; marriage to any one of them would deliver a future whose rooms, visits, and conversations she can already foresee.

She desires an event large enough to resist that completion. Julien attracts her because he does not flatter her, because something in him appears untamed, and because his birth makes attachment to him socially dangerous. A marquis’s daughter loving her father’s secretary would not be one more suitable romance. It could become a story.

She wants the woman’s place

It is too simple to say that Mathilde is merely vain. Her imagination is more exacting. She does not begin with the thought, “I want this man.” She begins with the image, “I want to be the woman who carried the head.”

A person and a position inside a narrative are not the same object. Mathilde assesses Julien partly by whether he can sustain the plot she wants. His intelligence, pride, low birth, and appetite for danger make him promising material. She imagines him becoming a great man or an executed one; either destiny is preferable to social insignificance.

Her method mirrors his. Julien asks what each relationship can purchase in the hierarchy. Mathilde asks whether Julien can purchase significance for her life. He seeks a position; she seeks a plot. Each risks treating the other as material for a private construction.

A romance that technique can operate

Their courtship becomes a sequence of reversals. Mathilde summons Julien to her room; he arrives armed, suspecting a trap. Once she has crossed the boundary, she fears that she has lowered herself, recoils, and humiliates him. Julien, unable to regain control, consults the worldly Prince Korasoff.

Korasoff gives him a manufactured solution: pay court to another woman and let Mathilde observe it. He even supplies a series of model letters. Julien copies language he did not write to a woman he does not desire in order to change the desire of a third person. The process is so empty that he nearly miscopies a name.

It works. That success is the joke’s serious point. The relation can be manipulated by a prefabricated technology because the story’s direction matters more to Mathilde than the unrepeatable person before her. Jealousy repairs the plot.

The summit

When Mathilde becomes pregnant, she tells her father that she will marry Julien or leave. The Marquis rages, then turns to administration. If the marriage cannot be stopped, it can be made legible. Julien receives a fabricated noble genealogy, the name of chevalier de La Vernaye, an income, and a commission in the army.

He has reached the summit promised by the two books of his youth. The carpenter’s son now possesses title, uniform, money, and a marriage into one of Paris’s great families. Stendhal also lets emptiness enter the victory. Julien has become one of the people whose world he despised. He has climbed the table without escaping its measure.

Then Madame de Rênal’s letter arrives, and the entire construction collapses in an instant.

Mathilde completes the legend

After Julien’s arrest, Mathilde works furiously. Pregnant and publicly compromised, she travels to the provincial town, spends money, petitions officials, kneels before men who might help, and attempts to manage the jury. These acts are not imaginary. They consume time, body, reputation, and future.

When Julien is executed, she claims his head, carries it, and buries it herself, reenacting the ancestral legend. The novel does not explain the gesture away. Two readings remain simultaneously true. Mathilde has obtained the scene she desired; Julien’s death has become the last act of her drama. She has also paid an irreversible price and performed difficult acts no mere salon fantasy could complete.

False motive, real cost

We cannot say that a theatrical motive makes the labor unreal. Nor can real sacrifice purify the motive. Mathilde’s difficulty lies in the refusal of those two facts to merge. She may love the story through Julien, yet the roads traveled, humiliations accepted, and social ruin incurred remain hers.

The contrast with Madame de Rênal organizes the ending. One woman treats the affair as a sin that occupies years of penitence. The other treats it as the legendary event her life had lacked. Julien spends hundreds of pages fighting to win Mathilde. In prison, with only weeks left, she is not the person he longs to see.

He has achieved everything their campaign was meant to secure, and none of it survives as the substance of happiness. Mathilde finishes her story after his death. Julien’s final task is different: to discover who he is when he no longer needs to provide anyone, including himself, with a heroic plot.
