Every Encounter Becomes a Campaign

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, edited for textual and historical precision.

One summer evening, Madame de Rênal rests her hand on the back of a chair. Julien sits beside her and issues himself an order: when the clock finishes striking ten, he must have taken that hand. If he has failed, he will return to his room and shoot himself.

This is not the hesitation of a young man wondering whether affection is returned. It is a military deadline, complete with objective, hour, and penalty. When Julien finally takes her hand, Stendhal describes not tenderness but the relief of a duty performed.

The military grammar of intimacy

Julien repeatedly imagines approach as attack, retreat as cowardice, and seduction as victory. The vocabulary comes from the Napoleonic world he cannot enter. Since history has denied him a battlefield, he reproduces one in the drawing room and garden.

That posture is theatrical, but it is not merely adolescent melodrama. In the Rênal household Julien occupies the unstable rank of a tutor: more cultivated than a servant, still an employee who can be bought, displayed, and dismissed. M. de Rênal values him partly as evidence that the mayor’s family can afford a resident instructor. Julien hears himself discussed like a furnishing.

Taking the mayor’s wife by the hand therefore means more to him than physical intimacy. It proves that a carpenter’s son can cross a boundary the household treats as natural. His imagined audience is the class that despises him. Madame de Rênal is the immediate object of the action; the social order is its true opponent.

The woman on the other side

Madame de Rênal does not enter the affair with an answering strategy. Raised in a convent and placed in an arranged marriage, she has lived for years without connecting marriage to love. Julien initially awakens something she mistakes for maternal concern. She lacks even the vocabulary by which he narrates every move.

Once she understands her attachment, religious terror follows. She believes herself guilty, reads her child’s illness as divine punishment, considers confession and death, and still cannot stop loving him. She possesses money and social position; the affair offers no advancement. It threatens the household, faith, reputation, and identity she already has.

In that sense she is the novel’s sharpest contrast to Julien. He enters the relation asking what courage and conquest can yield. She enters it with nothing to gain that society can recognize.

One affair, two actions

The same embrace therefore contains two different acts. Julien conducts an operation he believes he commands. Madame de Rênal is carried into a relation she does not know how to classify. The inequality does not mean that she has no agency, or that he never feels anything. It means they attach radically different weights to what they do together.

Stendhal allows strategy itself to be interrupted. There are periods when Julien forgets to calculate, simply remains with her, and experiences a happiness his plan did not contain. Those intervals disturb him. Feeling is dangerous not because it is weak, but because it removes him from command.

When anonymous letters and provincial suspicion make the affair untenable, Julien leaves for the seminary. He returns secretly to say goodbye; they weep, separate, and then enter different histories. He soon acquires new battles. She converts the relation into years of guilt.

A letter written through her hand

Years later, Julien has become secretary to the Marquis de la Mole and stands near the success he has pursued. Then Madame de Rênal sends a letter describing him as a hypocrite who seduces the women of his employers in order to rise.

The letter is hers in one sense and not hers in another. Under the direction of a confessor who has governed her penitence, she copies and signs language prepared for her. Julien does not know the chain of authorship. He sees only the hand of the one person whom he had allowed, however intermittently, to exist outside his calculations.

He buys pistols, travels back to Verrières, finds her at Mass, and fires twice. Stendhal withholds the elaborate inner accounting that accompanies nearly every earlier act. The silence is structurally exact: the shooting buys him nothing. He knows it will annihilate title, income, marriage, and future.

The asymmetry of betrayal

Julien later speaks as though Madame de Rênal has destroyed the only relation in which he meant no harm. Something in that judgment is true. Her letter does demolish the exception through which he remembered himself as more than a strategist.

Yet his account is radically unequal. He first approached her as a campaign, won, left, and largely forgot. She lived inside the consequences for years, interpreting love as sin until another man supplied the words by which she accused him. Julien measures betrayal by the weight the relation carried for him at the instant the letter arrived, not by the weight his actions had imposed on her.

The shots mark a rupture because they are the first major act his military method cannot explain. They are neither a successful attack nor a tactical retreat. They destroy the campaign itself. Once imprisoned, Julien will discover what remains when the commander has no future operation to plan.
