The insomnia plague reaches Macondo through Rebeca, an orphan who arrives carrying her parents’ bones. At first sleeplessness seems like a gift: work can continue through the night and life feels doubled. Then memory begins to go. Childhood disappears first, followed by the names and uses of things, and eventually the knowledge of who one is.
Aureliano labels the world. Table. Chair. Clock. Door. Cow. His father extends the system through the house and town. Then they notice that names will not preserve uses, so the label on the cow becomes an instruction: this is a cow; milk it each morning; boil the milk and add it to coffee.
Every repair exposes another depth of failure. What if people forget how to read? At the entrance to town they place a sign reading “Macondo” so they will remember where they live. In the street they raise a larger one: “God exists.”
The town understands that it is no longer protecting objects but the shared background in which objects, words, and actions have meaning. They write even though the writing may eventually become unreadable. Memory returns only when Melquíades arrives with a potion.
The later erasure is different. Banana workers demand decent housing, health care, and labor conditions. Company lawyers first prove in court that the workers do not exist as employees: they are temporary hires absent from the relevant rolls. Documentary disappearance precedes physical disappearance.
More than three thousand people gather at the station. An officer reads an order defining them as criminals and gives them five minutes to disperse. Fourteen machine guns fire. José Arcadio Segundo wakes inside a freight car stacked with bodies and jumps as the train carries them toward the sea.
Back in Macondo, he repeats his full name to assure himself he is alive and tells everyone what happened. The answer is gentle and unanimous: no one died here. The government announces that the dispute was settled and the workers went home.
During the plague, forgetting left an empty space into which a label could be inserted. After the massacre, the space has already been filled by signed documents, newspapers, and schoolbooks. An official account resembles evidence more closely than one traumatized man’s memory.
The townspeople need not be cowards. Bodies are gone. Records agree. The witness is regarded as unstable. There is nowhere to test his story. Memory survives only if it has a place to live—a document, monument, lesson, or another person’s confirming voice. Every place has been occupied.
José Arcadio Segundo hides in Melquíades’ room and repeats one sentence for the rest of his life: more than three thousand, thrown into the sea. The claim reaches one child, Aureliano Babilonia. One memory passes into a second person and stops there.
No one paints a sign this time. Eventually people insist not only that no massacre occurred, but that the banana company itself never existed.
