Making and Unmaking

As a child, Aureliano Buendía can foresee events. As a young man, he makes tiny gold fishes. After thirty-two failed uprisings and the peace at Neerlandia, Colonel Aureliano Buendía returns to that craft.

He makes two fishes a day. When twenty-five accumulate, he melts them down and begins again. The cycle continues until his death. Fernanda calls it a sickness of making in order to destroy.

The scale of the retreat matters. The Colonel has commanded armies, survived assassinations and execution, and become the government’s great enemy. During the war he asks Colonel Gerineldo Márquez why he fights. Márquez answers: for the Liberal cause. Aureliano realizes he fights from pride. The insight does not end the war. He continues for years, orders the execution of an old friend, and loses poems, companions, sons, and eventually even the memory of his mother’s face.

At peace he burns his poetry and shoots himself in the chest, surviving because the bullet follows a path that touches no vital organ. He refuses pensions, medals, and the title of hero. The fishes become an activity without accumulation, exchange, inheritance, or audience.

The Safety of What Cannot Be Used

During the war, gold fishes served as tokens identifying his agents. They were useful and recognizable. The Colonel’s seventeen sons are also recognizable: they share his surname and the permanent ash crosses marked on their foreheads. Assassins find them across the country and shoot almost every one through that mark.

Anything that can identify, connect, or be used can also be used against him. The postwar fishes therefore vanish at the moment they might become a stock. No twenty-sixth object can transform the series into wealth or legacy. He retreats to something no institution, heir, or enemy can take because he destroys it first.

This is not peace. A chalk circle drawn around him during the war to prevent assassination remains after the guards leave. He draws it himself and permits no one, including Úrsula, to enter. When the banana company arrives, he briefly seeks old comrades for another rebellion. None will follow. He returns to the workshop with the humiliation exposed.

Near the end, a circus passes. The Colonel tries to recover the childhood afternoon when his father showed him ice. He cannot. He walks to the chestnut tree where his father spent his final years and dies with his head against the trunk.

Soldiers later remove the unfinished fishes as relics. A street takes his name; in time residents no longer know why. The only fishes that survive are those he had not yet melted, and they survive by becoming exactly what he rejected: objects used by others to stabilize an official memory of him.
