Reading Old Tales South of the City

Four essays on the woman called mad, a thief a child refuses to classify, two women whose labor was sold, and the death that marks growing up.

Lin Haiyin’s child narrator, Yingzi, does not possess adult authority. That limitation becomes an ethical resource. She listens to people already classified by the city—madwoman, thief, servant—before learning the conclusions that are supposed to make listening unnecessary.

The essays examine the value and danger of that openness. A child can see what adult categories discard, but she can also intervene without understanding all the consequences. Growing up is not simply acquiring the adult map; it is deciding what not to lose when the map becomes unavoidable.

Lin Haiyin's Old Tales South of the City. Full-book spoilers throughout.
