Reading Brave New World

Four essays on engineered desire, chemical escape, two kinds of misfit, and the right to a life whose costs have not been designed away.

The World State is not free of coercion: it bans books, constrains science, conditions children, and exiles people who do not fit. Its distinctive achievement is to make overt force secondary. Biology, consumption, sex, entertainment, and soma are coordinated so that most citizens desire the places prepared for them.

Huxley’s question is therefore harder than whether happiness is good. What counts as happiness when the capacity to want otherwise has been designed in advance? These essays follow that question from the hatchery to John’s final demand for a life containing difficulty, responsibility, and unassigned value.

Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Full-book spoilers throughout.
