Ellie, Dina, and JJ build a life on a Wyoming farm. The domestic work is playable: feeding animals, moving through rooms, carrying a child. Then a sound changes, the image collapses, and Ellie is back inside Joel’s death.
The Seattle days have not ended. They interrupt the life that followed them.
Tommy arrives with information about Abby in Santa Barbara. Ellie initially refuses. Dina makes the cost explicit: if Ellie leaves, Dina will not wait.
Ellie goes anyway.
She is not simply choosing hatred over happiness. Ordinary life has failed to contain the trauma, and Abby remains attached to the fantasy of a finishable action. If the event cannot be lived past, Ellie can attempt to complete it.
She is looking less for a person than for an endpoint.
The Rattlers have enslaved Abby and Lev and left them tied to posts on the beach. Ellie cuts them down. Abby is emaciated and barely able to stand.
Then Ellie demands a fight. When Abby refuses, Ellie threatens Lev.
The sequence reveals that Abby’s death alone is not enough. An execution of a helpless prisoner would not supply the confrontation Ellie has imagined as closure. She first restores enough agency to Abby to force the shape she needs.
Abby carries Lev toward the boats in a composition that recalls Joel carrying Ellie from the hospital. The person who killed Joel now occupies the protector’s position; the child he saved stands opposite her.
The parallel does not make Abby become Joel in every moral respect. It lets Ellie encounter the form of his action outside her exclusive claim to it. Someone she hates is also carrying a child out of a system that has reduced him to a body.
Ellie forces Abby underwater. A memory flashes: Joel on the porch with his guitar. Ellie releases her.
She has not learned Abby’s history. She does not know about Jerry, the nightmares, Yara, or the theater as Lev experienced it. The game never gives the two women a clarifying conversation. Ellie also does not announce forgiveness.
Her refusal therefore establishes something modest and important. A person can stop trying to destroy another before understanding or absolving her. If complete empathy were a prerequisite for nonviolence, many conflicts would never stop.
“I will not kill you” can stand on its own. It does not declare the other person good or the injury repaired.
Ellie returns to an empty farmhouse. Missing fingers prevent her from playing Joel’s guitar as before. She leaves it and walks away.
Releasing Abby does not restore Dina, JJ, the fingers, or the time with Joel that never occurred. None of those losses was mechanically taken by Abby in the final encounter. They accumulated through Ellie’s attempt to make one death supply an ending for another.
The last flashback returns to the porch. Ellie had not forgiven Joel; she had agreed to try. What she lost most specifically was the time after that sentence—the ordinary sequence of attempts that might or might not have produced forgiveness.
Abby and Lev leave toward the Fireflies, and the changed completion screen points to their arrival at Catalina Island. Ellie’s destination remains open. The game offers no court that distributes suffering in exact proportion to guilt.
It offers one smaller result: both women live, and neither continues to demand the other’s death. They reach that result without mutual understanding. Sometimes cessation has to come first.
Based on Naughty Dog’s 2020 The Last of Us Part II. The changed post-completion title screen depicts Catalina Island and is commonly read as confirmation that Abby and Lev reached the re-formed Fireflies. Full spoilers throughout.
