Under the Maple Tree

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Plot claims have been checked and interpretive claims are marked as such.

Under the Maple Tree

The shogun’s reinforcements attack Castle Shimura across a narrow bridge. Men fall in rows. Jin watches a familiar form of courage produce bodies and no passage.

That night he enters the castle alone and poisons the Mongol garrison’s milk. The gates open without another samurai charge.

The method works. That is the beginning of its moral problem, not the end.

A method outlives its reason

Jin’s earlier departures from the code are intimate. He selects a guard, approaches a prisoner, or uses a tool in a particular encounter. Poison operates at a different scale. Once it enters the drink, the victim is no longer individually faced or judged.

The target that night is the occupying garrison, not an indiscriminate civilian population. Even so, Jin has made a technique transferable. The Mongols later recover the formula and use poison against islanders. A method born under the strongest justification travels beyond the reason that first authorized it.

Shimura opposes the Ghost’s tactics partly because they are effective. A failed exception may vanish. A successful one becomes an example.

His fear is political as much as personal. If common people learn that authority can be defeated from the shadows, the lesson will not necessarily expire when the invasion ends. The Ghost has already become a public name. Techniques now have followers.

What a prohibition costs

This does not automatically vindicate Shimura. His frontal assault spends lives to preserve a form. He asks soldiers to pay for a boundary he refuses to cross.

He pays it too. Shimura leads from the front, suffers capture, and remains prepared to die under the same rule he imposes. That integrity gives his position weight, but integrity cannot make a costly rule sufficient.

A prohibition matters most when violating it would bring advantage. Yet the lives saved by violation also matter. The game will not allow either side to own the whole argument.

Jin sees people treated as material for the code. Shimura sees a code eroded until no limit survives necessity. Both fears become real.

The order Shimura cannot refuse

After Khotun is defeated, the shogun dissolves Clan Sakai and declares Jin a traitor. Shimura is ordered to kill the nephew he intended to adopt as his heir.

Obedience now demands that he destroy the person for whom his obedience was supposed to secure a stable world. The code is not defeated from outside; it arrives at a command whose cost reveals what unconditional submission can consume.

Shimura still does not become a hypocrite. Hypocrisy would be easier. He suffers because he continues to mean what he has always said.

This is one of the story’s sharpest distinctions: sincerity can make a structure more tragic without making it right.

The request after the duel

Jin and Shimura meet at the Sakai cemetery under red maple leaves. They compose a final haiku and fight. Jin wins.

Shimura then asks for a warrior’s death. If Jin kills him, he grants the form of dignity Shimura recognizes. He also kills the last member of his family for the sake of that form.

If Jin spares him, he preserves Shimura’s life against Shimura’s explicit request. He refuses to let the code define love as an honorable killing, but he does not give Shimura the ending Shimura chose.

There is no clean opposition between respect and domination. Killing can honor the requested form while destroying its subject. Sparing can protect the subject while overruling his request.

The game does not announce one option as the moral solution. It leaves the player with two irreducible claims and no external rule capable of combining them without remainder.

Responsibility after inheritance

Whichever answer the player chooses, Jin no longer has a teacher who can settle right action in advance. The father, sword, samurai code, and Ghost legend were all given to him by others. Each helped him act; none can absorb responsibility for this decision.

This is not liberation in the easy sense. Jin loses title, estate, and legal place. The people he saved have learned methods whose future he cannot control. Shimura survives wounded or dies by his hand. Victory over Khotun does not close the account.

The sword beneath the maple tree carries no written answer. Jin must act anyway.

That is the cost of leaving an inherited law: not the right to do whatever works, but the obligation to become answerable for a rule that no longer has somebody else’s name on it.

Based on Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, including the Iki Island story. The final duel has two player-selected outcomes; the game does not designate one as the sole canonical moral answer. Full spoilers throughout.
