Unfinished

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument for English-language readers. Explicit plot facts are distinguished from interpretation.

At the end of the ordinary route, the Destined One sits in the depths of Water Curtain Cave. The old monkey approaches holding a golden circlet and places it on his head. The protagonist does not resist. The procedure concludes.

In the secret route, reached after the optional encounters culminating in Erlang and the return of Wukong’s memories, the old monkey lifts the circlet and stops. The Destined One opens his eyes. The difference between the endings is small enough to fit inside one gesture and large enough to reorganize the journey.

Two completions of the same body

The body, skills, weapons, and completed chapters are substantially the same. The ordinary ending does not depict a physically weaker monkey who requires greater restraint. It depicts a successor who has recovered capacity without the mind that remembers why Wukong rejected the role.

The secret ending does not show the protagonist overpowering the circlet. The hand simply does not place it. Memory has occupied the point at which external purpose would otherwise be installed.

In gameplay, the hidden ending can be obtained on the first cycle by completing the relevant secret areas and defeating Erlang before the final completion; the sixth relic’s perk appears after entering a new cycle. The story and interface reveal the sixth root at slightly different moments, a distinction the site’s source notes preserve.

The circlet as a substitute for mind

In Journey to the West, the circlet disciplines a powerful figure who refuses instruction. Guanyin supplies it, Tang Sanzang speaks the spell, and pain secures obedience. Authority delegates the switch to someone Wukong is bound to protect.

Black Myth permits another reading. The circlet is not only pressure applied against a developed will. In the ordinary ending it fills the position left empty when Wukong’s mind is absent. A body with immense ability still needs something to determine what the ability serves.

Control is easiest not when it continuously crushes a stated purpose, but when it arrives before a purpose has been articulated and can be mistaken for the subject’s own.

The person inside the uniform

Erlang appears as one of Heaven’s most authoritative enforcers and the warrior who helps break Wukong apart in the opening. The secret route reveals him preserving and releasing Wukong’s memories. Other figures associated with established powers also participate in ways the game leaves partly unexplained.

The point is not that they are secretly pure heroes. Their plans cost other people. Wukong’s body is broken; the Destined One crosses the world without full information. Ambiguous insiders can keep a private judgment under official clothing, but their indirectness transfers danger to those who do not share the plan.

Erlang’s last act still matters. He fulfills public commands and yet does not let those commands exhaust the account by which he judges what should survive.

Three titles and three sources

Keeper of the Heavenly Stables is conferred by Heaven and rejected once Wukong understands its contempt. Victorious Fighting Buddha is conferred after the pilgrimage and later abandoned despite its prestige. Great Sage Equal to Heaven is the name Wukong declares for himself.

Only the self-declared title cannot be withdrawn by the authority that issued it, because no higher authority issued it. It begins almost empty: a boast before the life that will give it weight. Wukong spends centuries, rebellion, punishment, and pilgrimage filling it.

“Destined One” arrives in the opposite condition. It is full of assigned function from the beginning and empty of biography. The difference between the names is not grandeur but authorship.

Memory returns backward

The secret ending’s animation moves backward through Wukong’s remembered history. It reaches the crowded Water Curtain Cave, where allies feast and speak of challenging Heaven, then shows the cave emptied and weapons broken. Wukong sets down his bowl, takes up his staff, and walks out.

This is not a forecast of victory. It is memory of loss returning alongside memory of defiance. The people at the table are gone; Heaven and the Buddhist order remain; the hierarchies criticized throughout the game have not been abolished.

The reverse movement does not tell the new bearer what to do. It restores the past that makes obedience no longer innocent.

“Unfinished” instead of victorious

The final chapter is titled “Unfinished.” The game declines to convert recovery of memory into a solved political future. Yellowbrow is defeated, but the world that made his critique possible remains. The portraits continue to archive dead yaoguai. Nobody guarantees that another rebellion will succeed.

A conventional completion would prove the journey justified by showing the restored hero win. This ending refuses that proof. It offers a future conflict without claiming that autonomy guarantees success.

Freedom appears as the ability to enter an unfinished struggle, not possession of its result.

The one difference that matters

From the scale of Heaven, little has changed. The same institutions, classifications, mountains, and old scores remain. The journey has not liberated every being recorded in the portraits.

One event is different: the circlet is raised and does not descend. The negative form is exact. The game does not tell us who the Destined One becomes; it prevents one answer from being installed before he can become anything.

Refusal of premature completion is not yet a self, but it preserves the space in which a self could appear.

The first statement is made without speech

For the entire game, others have told the protagonist what he is, how beings rank, what desire proves, what Wukong’s fragments mean, and where the journey should end. He has never answered aloud.

The secret ending does not suddenly give him a monologue. It gives him a visible act: his eyes open before the circlet can close the story.

That look does not state agreement with Wukong, declare war, or define a new doctrine. Its importance lies in being the first expression that is not supplied by a guide, god, monster, archive, or title. After a journey narrated by everyone else, the smallest sign of a first person is enough to leave the ending unfinished.

Based on Game Science’s 2024 game Black Myth: Wukong, produced by Feng Ji, in dialogue with Wu Cheng’en’s Journey to the West. The secret ending can be reached on a first cycle after its optional requirements; the sixth relic’s gameplay node appears upon entering a new cycle after that route. Full-game spoilers throughout.
