The Small Things He Did

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, checked against the released film and its dialogue.

Clément Mathieu arrives with an old case and a résumé full of disappointment. He has taught music, composed works nobody wants, and now accepts a prefect’s job at a remote institution. Rachin later reduces him to the post with deliberate contempt: a failed musician, a “small, small, small” prefect.

The insult is socially accurate. Mathieu cannot set policy, hire staff, abolish detention, or prevent Rachin from beating Mondain. Yet it would also be inaccurate to say he has no power. He has a classroom, temporary custody of children, musical knowledge, and a narrow ability to negotiate. The film is about what he chooses to place inside that narrow space.

I. His first deviation

Mathieu’s first consequential act is not a grand defense of progressive education. He knows that Le Querrec injured Maxence, but first asks Rachin to cancel the collective punishment, let him handle the culprit, and never demand the boy’s name.

He obtains the concession partly through bluff and partly by accepting responsibility for the result. He also uses authority against Le Querrec: between a new prefect and a child, he says, whom will the headmaster believe? This is not a scene without coercion.

The difference lies in where the coercion leads. Mathieu does not deliver the boy for a beating or pretend that the injury does not matter. He makes him care for Maxence until the man recovers.

II. A consequence with a person inside it

Action-reaction treats pain as an abstract unit: an offense has occurred, so a penalty must be attached. Mathieu’s arrangement keeps the action connected to the person who received it. Le Querrec changes dressings, brings things to the infirmary, listens, and watches Maxence’s condition worsen enough to require hospital treatment.

Maxence does recover. The value of the arrangement is therefore not a tragic death that teaches remorse. It is the slower experience of discovering that the object of a prank has a voice, patience, memories, and vulnerability. The boy’s worry when Maxence is taken away does not erase his act; it makes the act harder to reduce to a line in his own punishment record.

This is neither pure forgiveness nor a complete model of restorative justice. Mathieu conceals information and orders the child into care. It is a small redirection: from suffering imposed on the offender toward attention sustained upon the injured person.

III. Listening before selecting

The choir begins with auditions. One by one, boys stand before Mathieu and produce whatever song, obscene verse, patriotic fragment, or uncertain note they know. He listens and assigns a vocal part. For the first time, difference within the group is organized by something other than fault.

A punitive file asks how troublesome a child is. An audition asks what sound this particular body can make and what relation it might bear to other sounds. Both procedures classify, but they face in opposite directions. One sorts people toward exclusion and control; the other sorts voices toward a work none can make alone.

Mathieu is not merely “letting children express themselves.” He trains posture, pitch, rhythm, and attention. Inclusion is not the absence of form. It is a form designed so that discipline serves a shared work rather than making obedience the work itself.

IV. Two positions that did not need to exist

Corbin cannot find a musical note. Mathieu places the score in his open hands and names him the choir’s lectern. Pépinot knows no songs, so Mathieu appoints him assistant choirmaster and gives him the baton.

Neither role is technically necessary. A real stand could hold the score; an experienced musician does not require a small assistant. The positions are invented because two children are already present and must not be translated into “no use.”

Rachin begins with a function and keeps whoever satisfies it. Mathieu begins with persons and adjusts the practice until each has a relation to it. That does not make every contribution identical. Morhange’s voice is exceptional; Corbin’s is not. Equality here means that unequal abilities do not decide who is allowed to count as inside.

V. Mathieu can punish badly too

Morhange throws ink at Mathieu while his mother is visiting. The act grows out of jealousy and pride. Mathieu removes his solo, tells him that nobody is indispensable, and rehearses with the boy standing apart.

The punishment has a pedagogical point: talent does not authorize cruelty. It also contains Mathieu’s wounded pride. The adult who rejects action-reaction is not magically free of reaction. He can use belonging as leverage.

At the concert for the Countess, Mathieu finally turns and gives Morhange the cue. The boy sings. In his journal, Mathieu reads pride, gratitude, and the joy of forgiveness in Morhange’s eyes. The important signal is not that the ink did not matter. It is that the wrong did not permanently cancel the person’s place.

VI. Small does not mean solitary

The choir is initially tolerated, then prohibited, then continued underground. Mathieu needs collaborators. Chabert, once an enthusiastic executor of Rachin’s discipline, helps organize the secret rehearsals. Maxence writes to the Foundation about the choir. Langlois accompanies it.

Later, after Mathieu has gone, these three adults join forces to expose Rachin’s abuse. The children are questioned and the headmaster is dismissed. Mathieu does not accomplish this institutional result by himself, and the film does not tell us whether a better structure replaces him. But the sequence matters.

A different practice can alter the people who witness and participate in it. Once another way of holding authority has become visible, routine obedience is harder to mistake for necessity. A choir can therefore remain small in scale while changing who is prepared to testify.

VII. What his size allowed him to do

Mathieu does not save Mondain. He cannot prevent the beating, preserve his job, or keep the choir together. He misjudges, conceals, punishes, negotiates, and sometimes receives lucky outcomes. His goodness is not omnipotence.

What he does is more exact. He cancels one collective sanction. He places one culprit beside one injured man. He listens to boys one at a time. He invents two unnecessary offices. He restores one solo without declaring the offense unreal. He lets other adults experience an authority that does not need humiliation.

These acts are small because their reach is limited, not because their object is trivial. Each refuses, at one local point, to let an institution’s ready-made category become the whole person. Reform may or may not follow. At that point, somebody has already been met differently.

This essay reads Christophe Barratier’s 2004 film Les Choristes (The Chorus), written by Barratier and Philippe Lopes-Curval and adapted from the 1945 film La Cage aux rossignols.
