The Word Kin

Edition note: An independent English rewriting of the Chinese argument, shaped for English-language readers.

The servants outside the protected word

Queerats walk upright, use tools, speak, maintain colonies, wage wars, and negotiate through ranks. Their colonies have queens, soldiers, councils, and competing political designs. They call humans gods, offer tribute, accept human arbitration, and perform labor the dominant society delegates to them.

The language of animal management makes all this seem compatible with human moral order. Attack inhibition and death feedback protect those perceived as the same species. Queerats are classified outside that species, so they can be commanded, punished, killed, or used in proxy conflict without activating the protection.

The rule “do not attack our own” has not been weakened. Its boundary has done all the work.

What the last genetic report reveals

Near the end, Satoru brings Saki the results of genetic research. Queerats share the human chromosome count, and the history indicates that non-Cantus humans were altered with traits from naked mole rats. This was not cosmetic degradation performed after the social order was settled. It helped settle the order.

Psychic humans could not kill non-psychic humans while their bodies recognized them as human. Rather than place an exception inside death feedback, the victors changed the population that needed to be attacked. Bodies, appearance, and inherited classification were moved until the target no longer registered as kin.

The solution is frightening because it leaves the prohibition immaculate. No citizen a thousand years later needs to be a hypocrite. Textbooks call queerats another species; committees use the language of animal control; conscientious people follow every rule honestly. An exclusion made sufficiently deep no longer has to be hidden. It becomes the world that sincerity describes.

Kiroumaru and Squealer

The anime gives two faces to life within that boundary. Kiroumaru, commander of the Giant Hornet colony, is formidable, formal, and capable of aiding Saki and Satoru without pretending he enjoys human domination. He preserves room for judgment while operating inside the existing order.

Squealer, later Yakomaru, approaches humans with extravagant submission while learning how to maneuver through their rules. He modernizes his colony, accumulates power, and searches for leverage. One works within the boundary; the other prepares to force it open. Both remain objects of administration in the language above them.

Protective laws are often debated as lists of prohibited acts. From the New World directs attention to the noun that follows: prohibited against whom? A system can enforce every safeguard without corruption while abandoning an entire population, provided the population has first been moved outside the grammar of protection.

Squealer’s rebellion will expose that history. It will also show how readily a movement against being used can begin using others.
