If ren is the center of Confucius’s thought, we might expect its clearest definition. Instead, three students ask about it at the beginning of one chapter and receive answers of strikingly different scale. Yan Hui is told to master himself and return to ritual; when he asks for particulars, he receives four boundaries: do not look, listen, speak, or act contrary to ritual. The positive contents remain his to judge.
Zhonggong, whom Confucius considered capable of governing, receives a public ethic: meet others as honored guests, employ people as though conducting a great sacrifice, and do not impose what you would reject yourself. The answer addresses the danger carried by someone who will exercise power. Ren appears here not as inward serenity but as the manner in which another person enters one’s decisions.
Sima Niu, quick and profuse in speech, receives only this: the person of ren is hesitant in speaking. He objects—is hesitation all ren means? Confucius points to the difficulty of doing what words promise. The brevity is the prescription. A fuller definition would let a man whose trouble is speech acquire still more words.
The three replies are not a survey of ren’s components. They are medicines for three people. The book even records whether each answer lands: Yan Hui and Zhonggong undertake the teaching; Sima Niu asks in disbelief. A fitting intervention need not produce immediate satisfaction, and the teacher does not change it merely to make the learner feel served.
‘To love people,’ the phrase later treated as the definition, is also an answer to a named person—Fan Chi—and not even his only answer. At other times he is told to put difficulty before reward or to practice respect and fidelity in ordinary conduct. If ren concerns treating people as people, a single formula delivered without regard for difference would already betray it. The absence of a standard answer is not a hole in the teaching. It is evidence of what the teaching sees.
