‘Do not disobey’ is often cited as the Confucian definition of filial conduct. In the Analects, those words are the beginning of a conversation, not its end. Meng Yizi asks about filiality and receives the compressed answer. Later Confucius raises the exchange while Fan Chi is driving. Fan Chi asks what it meant. Confucius explains: while parents live, serve them according to ritual; after death, bury and sacrifice according to ritual. What must not be violated is ritual, not every parental wish.
The listener matters. Meng Yizi headed one of Lu’s powerful hereditary houses, families notorious for using ceremonies reserved for higher ranks. ‘Do not overstep’ is a well-aimed warning to that man. His own father had entrusted him to Confucius to learn ritual. Fan Chi lacks this background, so the short answer needs opening. Without Fan Chi’s follow-up, later readers would possess two dangerous floating words.
Three adjacent questions make the method visible. Meng Wubo, the next generation of the same family, is told to let his parents worry only about illness—everything reckless within his control should cease to trouble them. Ziyou is told that providing food is not enough; animals are also fed, and human care requires respect. Zixia, diligent and service-minded, is told that performing tasks and serving food is the easy part; the difficult part is the expression on one’s face.
These are not four fragments of a definition waiting to be assembled. They are four interventions aimed at excess, recklessness, reduction to maintenance, and reduction to chores. None simply says ‘obey.’ Elsewhere Confucius explicitly tells children to remonstrate gently when parents are wrong. Remonstration is not obedience; it is a form of relationship that refuses both abandonment and surrender of judgment.
The editors place the four replies beside one another without explaining away their difference. That arrangement is itself a lesson: filial care is not a rule applied identically to everyone. It begins by seeing who is asking, what relation is already present, and where that relation is in danger of becoming empty.
