Hold to Anti-Colonization Inwardly, Strive for Cultivation Outwardly
A thing is in front of him. Nobody is deciding it for him, no ready rule decides it for him, and he does not want to hand himself over. What is a person standing before a decision doing, in this matter? The series answers in the first person: deciding is negating — striking out what he will not do, and seeing what he cannot not do. Neither needs an affirmed goal first.
Two threads run through all of it. Inwardly, hold to anti-colonization: do not do what others use to colonize you, and do not take the view they colonize you with for your own. Outwardly, strive for cultivation: a direction that waits on whether the other is willing, suited, and whether the time is right — so it must leave a blank, because the other person’s share is his. Judgment sits in the person standing there; it can be questioned, can be wrong, and can be looked back on.
Eleven essays from the eleven papers of the SAE Action Theory: a prequel, nine essays and an interface essay. They follow one man who makes reports at a company, from a number he would not change to his retirement. They write no ought, and they are not a decision procedure.
This series is for someone standing before a decision: a thing in front of him, nobody deciding it for him, no ready rule deciding it for him, and he does not want to hand himself over. What it is not, what it will not do for the reader, and what it gives.
Essay 01His manager wants a metric recalculated on a different basis. The first thing he gets clear is this: he will not change that number. When a person decides, what he does is negate — not-doing, cannot-not-doing — and the line is his to draw; no rule can draw it for him.
Essay 02In his first year a team lead said change the calculation, everyone does it, and he changed it. Years later a young colleague said the same sentence to him. Anti-colonization starts, in action, as a not-doing; hold to it inwardly, strive for cultivation outwardly.
Essay 03A new colleague asks why he went and told them, back then. He remembers he could not not tell them; he also remembers caring about his review so much that year he could not sleep. Was that caring his own? Not being able to tell at the time is real; looking back comes later, without faking it.
Essay 04The same thing came round again. This time he did not need long; this was something he could not not tell. And he did not go: two weeks ill, and afraid; the email was written and never sent. How body, feeling, habit and hesitation come in without deciding what his law is.
Essay 05He has done woodwork for seven or eight years. Nobody asked him to, and none of it counts toward his review. A law that is only ever holding ground is only ever defence; this essay is the other side — how a person's own value unfolds in time without having to prove itself useful.
Essay 06A new hire treats the manager's preferred basis as the rule of the trade. Watching him, his first thought is: he is like I was. It is the most natural thought and the one most likely to go wrong. Not colonising; cultivation as a direction that must leave a blank; what others get is theirs.
Essay 07Bad years: the company rules that the bottom tenth of every group is rated unqualified and not renewed. His manager asks him to draft the list. How someone who lives by his own law acts in germination, in inversion, and in an establishment not yet arrived — what changes with the situation, and what does not.
Essay 08Years later he met the head of the team he once went to tell. How two people who each live by their own law find one another, and do one thing together without becoming one person; consensus is not sameness, and what you did is not owned by someone else.
Essay 09A new general manager puts up an efficiency dashboard, ranking everyone weekly on a big screen — built from the very basis notes once written so readers would not be misled. A shared phase transition is a direction, not a requisition; guarding keeps people from being reduced to means again; the series closes here.
InterfaceOnly after the nine does the series talk with others: Aristotle, Kant, Williams and Frankfurt, Korsgaard, the Stoics, Wang Yangming, the Analects, care ethics, Hirschman. How far agreement goes, where they part, and the three lines the differences keep falling on. Judgment is not in rules, nor with whoever judges in your place, but in the person standing before the decision.
