When That Way Is Closed

The role he wanted is frozen. His mother is back in hospital. Does he still want what he wanted? A closed way does not answer that question for him—and persistence, a different route and stopping are not ranks of courage.

Han Qin (秦汉秦汉秦漢) ·

The email arrived in March. Three lines: all newly created roles were frozen.

He read it twice. One of those roles was a job he had wanted for two years. He made reports for a living; this job would put him beside the people who used them to make decisions. He would explain where a number came from, what it supported, what it could not tell them. He had prepared talks and asked about a transfer. The email mentioned neither him nor the drawer full of notes. All new roles. No exceptions announced.

The colleague beside him received it too, closed it, and returned to work. Neither had misunderstood the message. It simply blocked something different in each life—or, for the colleague, nothing he had been planning at all.

Other things were happening that year. The company was cutting people by a fixed proportion. His mother kept needing hospital care. Sometimes he spent the night beside her bed, went home to change, and went straight to the office. The transfer became harder to talk about among these larger troubles. People would point out that he still had a job.

He did. The place he had hoped to go was also closed to him. Neither fact cancelled the other.

What the feeling knows—and what it does not

We use adversity to name both an external event and the distress it brings. For this inquiry, it helps to separate them. There is what happened. There is something a person takes to be his own purpose. And there is what he feels when the two fail to fit. Adversity, in the sense used here, names that last thing. It is not simply another name for a hiring freeze.

The colleague never wanted that role. Its suspension did not interrupt his plans. This does not make him callous, or make the disappointed man oversensitive. Someone else can see no loss where I feel one because what matters to us is not the same. Their different response does not, by itself, correct mine.

Nor does my distress certify everything I believe about the situation. He had read frozen as abolished. He assumed nothing would reopen next year. When he finally asked HR, the answer was narrower: the role had not been abolished; nobody knew when hiring would resume. The problem remained real. It was not quite the problem he had been living through at three in the morning. A feeling can genuinely occur while the predictions travelling with it are wrong.

For months he slept badly and ate less. When he woke, his mind supplied next year: no role, harsher cuts, another hospital admission. Checking the email did not make all this stop. Exhaustion in the body, trouble carried in memory, trouble anticipated in the future can coexist. They are not successive levels a person has to complete.

In a hospital corridor his sister asked why the transfer mattered so much when his present job was secure. He knew she was worried about him. Her question also brought something into focus: she did not have to want it, but he had wanted it for two years. Whether he still did was a question no one else could finish for him.

Wanting it for two years did not settle where that desire came from. He cared about the people making decisions from his figures. He had also heard, since his first year, that making reports was a dead-end job. How much was he moving toward useful explanation, and how much trying to escape that verdict? The ache of losing the opportunity did not distinguish them for him.

A smooth passage would not have settled it either. Early in his career he had accepted whatever the company said made a good employee. He did not always feel a mismatch then. Ease can accompany a life we have made our own; it can also accompany arrangements we have never thought to question. Neither ease nor pain is a reliable certificate of authorship.

Someone decided to freeze the role. His mother's illness was not someone deliberately obstructing him. Even where other people are involved, their failure to arrange the world around his hopes does not alone make them wrong. Whether a redundancy rule reduces people to removable percentages has to be judged from what the rule does, not inferred from how much he suffers. And an illness does not become a lesson sent for his benefit because he eventually learns something during it.

If a person has things he wants to do, no way of living can guarantee that the world will always accommodate them. Unavoidable does not mean deserved. The possibility of reflection does not leave him owing his difficulties a word of thanks.

Once, describing his drawer of talks, he laughed: two years of preparation, and he was still the only audience. Then he went back and revised a page. The laugh did not establish that he had let the project go. It could sit beside the disappointment, without deciding what the project would become.

The route and the thing it was meant to reach

His mother was admitted again that autumn. Waiting in the corridor, he returned to the transfer. Was this still something he wanted? Was that role the only way of doing it? What changes could their money, and his body, bear just now? Nobody had deliberately set him an examination. The situation had nevertheless put these questions in front of him. That did not make whoever imposed an unjust rule entitled to judge his life.

The questions were not a form he had to complete before acting. He asked about two similar jobs elsewhere. Both paid less. With hospital costs and family needs, he could not take that risk that year. Discovering another route and being able to afford it were different things.

In winter he stopped pressing for a transfer. Instead, he asked his manager whether he could spend a little time each month explaining reports to the two departments that used his work. The manager agreed. Not moving companies was a delay; beginning these sessions was a change of method. They could happen in the same month. He did not need one grand name for the whole decision.

During the Crimean War, Mary Seacole tried unsuccessfully in London to join the nursing effort. Her autobiography recounts taking another route: travelling at her own expense, then running a business with a partner that supplied provisions and also cared for sick and injured people. Trade and care belonged to the same undertaking. There is no need to erase the trade to notice the care.

Her example does not establish that everyone who truly cares can find a way. Paying for one's own journey requires means. It shows something smaller: leaving an application process need not mean leaving the work it was supposed to make possible. The recorded actions give us that distinction. We need not invent a complete inward transformation for her, or turn her eventual achievement into a demand that another blocked person achieve as much.

Sometimes more than the method changes. By the following spring, he had been explaining reports within his team for a winter. Asked again about the transfer, he answered differently. At first he had wanted a designated role beside the decision-makers: to become the person whose job was explaining figures. Now he wanted every report leaving his hands to be intelligible to whoever used it. The particular post was no longer a necessary part of that undertaking.

He did not say he had never wanted the post. That would have been untrue. He had wanted it, and losing the prospect had hurt. He was revising what he had taken on, not deleting the past so that the present would look untroubled. He still could not entirely separate his own concerns from that old remark about a dead-end job. Not every uncertainty had to be resolved before he could change something.

From outside, all anyone saw was that he did not apply. Under that same outward fact might lie a delay, a new method, a revision of the undertaking, or an end to claiming it as his own. Even he needed time to tell. A missing application could not authorize someone else to declare him finally mature—or never sincere.

There is another possibility: an actual inability. Being unable to get out of bed with a fever is not a fresh decision to abandon a purpose. Fatigue can matter to what is possible this week without proving that he no longer cares. He does not have to withdraw his commitment before acknowledging a limit. Nor must he reach the point of being unable to sustain himself before self-preservation counts. That extremity lies outside this essay's inquiry; its account of persistence cannot be imposed on someone there.

Still, he did not want to call every ending a postponement. If he had stopped wanting something, he could say so. If he wanted it but could not bear what doing it required, that sentence could stand too. He need not disguise giving up as waiting, or exhaustion as serene acceptance. None of these possibilities is automatically the right answer. Naming this one honestly, and being able to reconsider it, matters more than choosing the most flattering name.

What he can still give

An older colleague once patted his shoulder and told him that hard times called for gritting his teeth. He heard the kindness. But a pat on the shoulder could not assign him persistence. If he went on, it would be because he still found himself unable to say no to this work—not because someone else had issued a duty. That recognition could be mistaken, could be questioned again, and could fail to become action when his strength ran out.

He and his sister had agreed to alternate weeks taking their mother to hospital. Each had reasons of their own for undertaking the same practical arrangement. When his week came, he tried to move work around it. This too was something he cared about, directed toward another person. Caring for his mother did not relocate his judgment inside her. It did not give him authority over how his sister arranged her week either.

A younger colleague had asked him to teach her how to write the notes explaining a report's basis. They worked together twice. Then the freeze, the cuts and the hospital visits arrived, and months passed without another session. That gap alone could not show that he had stopped caring about her opportunities. Saying he still cared could not settle the matter in the opposite direction.

What mattered was whether her own work still actually entered his reasons and plans. Later, he arranged for her to join him on the first-quarter report, and she said she wanted to try. Here was something more substantial than a consoling description of himself. It still guaranteed nothing about next year. She might lack time or change her mind. Her participation was not evidence she owed him that his difficult year had meaning. He could make an opportunity available; whether she took it, what she learned and where she went were questions he could not answer on her behalf.

Anne Sullivan changed her arrangements while teaching Helen Keller. In her letter of April 10, 1887, she described setting aside fixed lessons and reconsidering how a child learns language, bringing teaching into daily life. A prepared method did not entitle the teacher to make the child demonstrate that it worked. What we can see is a teacher altering conditions for learning. The child's learning was not a step Sullivan could take on her behalf, and suitable conditions were not a guarantee of the result.

The obstruction of his own project did not have to close every way he faced other people. But persistence for others was not, for that reason, higher or more authentically his. He was working, attending hospital, finishing reports late at night. Once he slept through his stop on the train. His capacity had to include the fact that he too was a person, not a supply that could be drawn down whenever someone else needed it.

Protecting someone currently being harmed need not wait until they are ready for a lesson about their life. Yet protection does not give the protector ownership of what comes next. Nor does hardship create an account to be settled later: after everything I did for you, why didn't you live as I advised? Another person's thanks cannot be made the repayment for one's decision to continue.

A colleague whose contract was not renewed came to see him. He made inquiries and wrote a reference. Some evenings they ate downstairs and talked mostly about other things. A person beside someone in difficulty can change conditions, offer practical support, remain present. He cannot decide what the experience must mean to the person living it. Being unable to take their place does not condemn him to standing by.

The frozen role opened once more. He did not apply. He kept handing in reports, one at a time, thinking before each one about who would have to read it.

This is not an ending in which persistence finally proves that it pays. He did not get the role he had wanted. He did not explain the old desire away as a mistake. He had simply not allowed a three-line email to answer every remaining question. One way was closed. What was still his to do had to be recognized slowly, among the things he could do and the things he could not.

A reader essay based on Adversity, the special study in SAE Action Theory; English is independently written. It returns to the report-maker in the original series without extending its numbered sequence. It does not prescribe endurance, diagnose distress or promise that hardship produces growth. The paper’s discussion excludes the extremity in which a person cannot sustain themself.
