Was That Caring His?

Why Did You Tell Them?

Several years have passed. The report was handed in long ago; the other team learned of their problem; things reached their own end. He has moved to another group and still prepares reports. One day a new colleague asks him: Why did you go and tell them, back then?

He can answer, and not entirely. He remembers that he could not not tell them. He also remembers that he cared a great deal about his year-end review that year — enough to lie awake several nights. He told them because he would not regard that team as fine to keep in the dark; he still stands by that today. But caring that much about the review — what was it for? Was that caring his?

The second essay said that recognising colonization is sometimes easy and sometimes hard. This essay takes the hard kind: whether a line he drew was his own. That question often cannot be answered on the day the line is drawn. It waits for later.

What an Outside Ruler Can Do

That year reviews came in five ranks. The manager said: only first-rank people are good at this job. He got third, because of that report. The review was real. It fixed his bonus, whether he could move to the group he wanted, how others saw him. All of that could enter his judgment: he could weigh how much telling them would cost him, whether to talk to the manager first. Someone who lives by his own law does not pretend those things do not exist.

Outside things can also be material. That year the manager called him too literal about things. He thought about it later and found half of it was right: some things he had been literal about did not need it. And outside things can be inspiration. An older colleague once told him: a report is for people to read, and who is reading it often matters more than the numbers themselves. He kept that sentence for years.

There is only one thing an outside ruler cannot do: decide for him what his value is. First rank is a good employee can be a true description — that company really did count that way — and it can be material for his weighing. It cannot make being first rank something he himself values. Whether a thing counts as his value depends on whether it stands in him, not on whether it stands in someone else’s table. The framework says it exactly: knowing a thing is valued elsewhere and finding that you value it are two things; the word that differs is yourself.

When an outside thing does occupy that position, that is colonization. Recall the two branches. Pressed from outside: someone calls a thing his, he denies it, and his denial does not get through; others can see this. Believed by himself: a thing counts as his, and what holds it up is in fact an outside guarantee — a manager’s word, an institution’s ranking, something an elder said — and he has not noticed. That second is self-colonization. It sits in his own believing, and others cannot see it. Neither needs anyone to intend it; the word is not a moral accusation here.

This is often heard as don’t listen to other people. It is not. Assessments can be listened to, used, allowed to change you. What is refused is only one position: the position of deciding for you. A conflict can give you reasons, material, pressure, new facts, and prompt you to change; it cannot complete for you the confirmation that this change is really mine. Outside assessments are the same. If he changes, he is the one changing. If others changed him and he believes he did it himself — that is what this essay is about.

What Came In Is Not Thereby Decided For You

The old colleague’s sentence came in. Today when he picks up a report, his first thought is who it is for; that view was first someone else’s. Was he decided for? No. A thing first given by someone else can later grow in you. The source does not enter the judgment; what matters is what the thing stands on now. That sentence kept standing up again and again in his own work; he does not believe it because the old colleague said it. Taking inspiration from someone and refusing to be decided for by them can both happen at once.

The hard kind is something else. Over the years he formed a habit: pick up a report, look first at whether the numbers look good. Not on purpose; the eyes just go there after enough years. It is in him, automatic, effortless, always there. Is it his law?

Not because of those things. The framework: an outside guarantee can be remembered, made into habit, and thereafter reproduce itself with no further outside input — the source is still outside; the running need not be. Automatic, effortless, persistent — none of the three moves where the chain of entitlement lands. Habituation confers no ownership. Look first at whether the numbers look good may simply be that company’s logic running on in him by itself.

That is not to say every habit is suspect. Carefulness, punctuality can be long habits and at the same time genuinely his. Being inside him proves neither that a thing is his nor that it isn’t.

Discovery, Not Retrieval

For a while later on, he found that what he cared about was the people behind the report — the ones who had to decide things by it: would the reader be led astray by the numbers, would someone next quarter pay for a basis. That care did not feel like remembering something. It felt like seeing it for the first time.

Someone might say: you were always like this; that company just held it down for a few years. It sounds kind. The series does not say it. Discovering, in this framework, means only that something has taken up a place in you — not that you found something that was there all along. To call it getting back implies an original waiting to be got back; for some people there is no earlier to return to, and the first thing that surfaces from their own doing is acquired, not returned.

Nor the reverse: strip away those years of caring and what remains is the real you. Removing something held up from outside clears a seat, not a self already built. Whether anything of his own later surfaces on that seat, and whether he owns it if it does, is later business. Discovering one’s own value is not recovering a self buried long ago. It can be arriving for the first time.

Not Being Able to Tell, Yet

Back to that year. Could he tell, then, whether that caring was his? No — and not because he was careless. If it was self-colonization, its shape was exactly this: something run as already his, while he did not see it resting outside. The phrase taking it as already contains not having seen through it. If he could see in the moment that it was not his, the taking-as would collapse on the spot. So what can be seen through in the moment is already not of this kind. Not being able to tell, then, was really not being able to tell.

The scope of this is narrow. It concerns only is this mine? Facts that can be checked now get checked now — whether the team already knew is a look at their records, not something to wait on. A sudden flicker of doubt settles nothing either way: it neither proves the thing is propped from outside nor dissolves anything owned. And not being able to tell is not the same as there being no difference.

So a person who lives by his own law acts inside not being able to tell. That afternoon he went and told them without first working out where every feeling in him came from. Had he waited until everything was clear, he could not have moved that day. He acted on the judgment available and left the unclear to later.

And time does not sort it out by itself. Something propped from outside, held however long, does not move its ground from outside to inside. But things do happen in time. Three people make it plain. One studied medicine because his family decided it. Twenty years later what is clear is that it became his — not that it always was, but that across operations and patients he slowly owned it; time gave room to take shape. One has said all her life she loves painting, and seldom paints. Time laid the clues out — when she could have, she didn’t — but the clues did not read themselves: perhaps no conditions, perhaps you have a gift for it has been holding up I love painting all along; only she can walk back and see. One hated his parents’ thrift and was thrifty all his life. Time made the thrift he owned and the thrift that was merely bred into him equally familiar. Familiar is not the same as his, nor as not his.

Looking Back, and Not Faking It

What he did in the days after the question, the series calls looking back: afterwards, checking whether an action came from his own law or had changed hands. It checks three things. The source — follow the explanation backwards. Why did the review matter so much? Because first rank is a good employee. Why is that? Because the manager said so, the company counted so. Further back: nothing. The ground stops in someone else’s table. And why did he tell them? Because he would not regard them as fine to keep in the dark. Why? Further back: it stops in him — he acknowledges that people are ends, and still does. Perhaps honesty was first taught by his father; that changes nothing. What matters is where it stands now, not where it came from.

The facts: what happened; did he hesitate; whom did he go to first; what became of the team; how much did he lose. Old emails can be read, old colleagues asked. And what footing it enters his reasons on today. That caring, seen now to rest outside, no longer enters as this is what I value — though the lost bonus still enters as a fact. What he owned then — not regarding people as fine to keep in the dark — still enters as something he owns. It has not lapsed for going unused; only revision or withdrawal changes it.

A few things about looking back are easily overstated. It can be wrong, and it can be done again. In a few years he may see that part of that caring was his after all — wanting to do the thing well. It does not rewrite what happened: that year still happened, those nights he still did not sleep. It looks at lines drawn, not into the heart: not introspection in the moment, but walking back along explanations across time; its evidence is explanations and facts, not how it feels now. And only he can do it. The new colleague can ask — and the question is very useful. If the colleague says that caring was never yours, the colleague has decided nothing. What others can do is hand him a question, a view he could not reach from inside the story he had.

Sorting out what is one’s own is not homework; nobody assigns it from outside, and not doing it is not recorded as failure. But for someone it comes from where he stands. A person who has steadied himself as an end and begins treating others as ends too — beginning to cultivate them — finds that sorting out what is his is now a cannot-not. If something in him still stands on an outside guarantee and he takes it for his own, then when he hands it to someone else he risks handing over something of unclear origin as this is my law; plant that in another person, however kindly, and the framework calls it gentle colonization. So without sorting out your own, there is no cultivating anyone. The cannot-not here is to sort, not to have sorted: he still acts inside not being able to tell.

There is one easy answer to the new colleague: I didn’t even think, I just went and told them. It is not true. He thought, he hesitated, he lay awake. Looking back has no test; it relies on walking back along one’s own explanations, and if those are invented, looking back reads the invention. So it has one negative edge: not faking it — say what you did. It has three faces: do not call what is unfinished finished; do not call what changed hands your own; and do not call what is your own something that changed hands.

What he said, in the end, was this. I told them because I couldn’t regard those people as fine to keep in the dark. That year I was also very afraid of losing my review. Both are true. Only the first is one I still stand by today.
