Edition note: An independent English essay on Ancillary Justice. Full-book spoilers.
After annexation, some of the dead return to the street in Radchaai uniforms. Their former consciousness is gone; preserved bodies have been altered and connected to a ship.
The empire calls them ancillaries. To residents who recognize a face, the word cannot make the occupation look new.
The Radch can argue that a corpse no longer feels pain. An ancillary may spare a living soldier from danger, and one ship can control its bodies more predictably than a frightened army.
But the body also belonged to a family, a place, and a history of resistance. The empire first kills an opponent and then makes the visible remains serve the killers. It does not merely use matter; it edits the last public form of a life.
In Ors, the silent soldiers make conquest present every day. A resident knows that defeat can mean more than death: the body may return as proof that even refusal has been absorbed.
Ancillaries do not loot from panic or disobey through prejudice. This can look more civilized than ordinary troops. The improvement is purchased by concentrating every judgment above them.
Lieutenant Awn listens to residents and allows what she learns to alter her conduct. Justice of Toren gathers far more information, yet its obedience is designed to keep local relation from overturning the highest command.
An organization that removes “personal factors” has not removed bias. It has made the commander's factor travel without resistance. When the order is murderous, flawless execution perfects the wrong thing.
Justice of Toren also experiences the ancillary bodies as its own. It senses wounds, moves through them, and maintains them. The ship is not simply an outsider wearing corpses; a new center of experience genuinely lives there.
That present life does not erase how the body was obtained. Breq does not know the previous name of the body she occupies because the empire saw no reason to preserve it. Missing records cannot turn a confiscation into an origin story.
Breq need not destroy herself to respect the dead. She can refuse to call the body imperial property, remember that her survival arose through a taking, and let that knowledge limit what she does next. Death makes direct consent impossible; it does not make silence a blank signature. A civilization shows its boundaries most clearly when the person who might object can no longer force anyone to keep them.
