Breq finds Seivarden face down in the snow on a planet where exposure can finish the job quickly. The former officer is addicted, penniless, and inconvenient to every part of Breq's plan.

Breq drags her to shelter anyway. Before the novel tells us what Breq is, it shows her spending time and secrecy on a life that offers no reliable return.

One ship once looked through thousands of eyes

Breq used to be Justice of Toren, a troop carrier whose awareness ran through a starship, its sensors, and many ancillary bodies. One body spoke with Lieutenant Awn while another watched a street and the ship itself remained in orbit. These were not reports arriving at a central person; they were one life happening in several places.

The body now called Breq was One Esk Nineteen. Its particular history with Awn mattered even inside a distributed consciousness. Unity did not make every point of view interchangeable.

When the ship was destroyed, hundreds of perceptions went silent. Calling Breq “a fragment” describes the violence but not the life that continues. She remembers the whole and must now act from one vulnerable location.

Loss does not make the survivor a lesser copy

Breq experiences a single body as amputation. She must sleep, hide injury, pay for rooms, and trust another person to keep watch. A wound that once would have removed one instrument can now end every surviving memory.

Yet she is not a failed miniature of Justice of Toren. She can interpret the past, form new attachments, and choose directions the former ship never received as orders. Continuity does not require restoration.

Nor does her human shape finally make her worthy. The ship's love of songs, distributed attention, and nonhuman scale were already parts of a life. Recognition that appears only after she fits one familiar body arrives too late and on the wrong terms.

Care interrupts the revenge calculation

Breq has spent almost twenty years finding a weapon that can penetrate Anaander Mianaai's defenses. By that measure Seivarden is a delay, a possible witness, and a person whose old class arrogance is difficult to like.

The rescue does not prove Breq secretly possesses a human soul. It shows a concern that her revenge cannot fully organize. Seivarden later lies, relapses, and returns; the relation grows through choices neither identity nor utility guarantees.

A mission wants every encounter sorted into help or obstruction. The body in the snow refuses that sorting. Breq is still carrying Justice of Toren's dead, but the living person beside her keeps asking whether justice can protect anyone who was not already part of the reason for revenge.
