How Far Is Too Far?
The Mean Has No Ruler
“Virtue is a mean” is among the most repeated and least helpful summaries of Aristotle. It invites a picture of arithmetic moderation: locate two extremes, measure the distance, and stand in the middle. Aristotle repeatedly blocks that picture. The mean is relative to us, determined as practical reason would determine it, and action concerns particulars in which exactness is unavailable.
By the end of Book II, the elegant definition has become a practical problem. How does anyone find the mean when desire and habit distort perception? Aristotle offers rough aids rather than an algorithm. Avoid the more opposed extreme. Notice the direction in which you personally tend to be carried and pull yourself toward the other side, as one straightens bent wood. Above all, guard against pleasure, because we are poor judges when pleasure is involved.
The final decision remains a matter of perception. At what point anger becomes excessive, generosity wasteful, or caution cowardly cannot be stated with universal precision. Small deviations may escape blame; larger ones are evident. The boundary is real without being mechanically specifiable.
Direction Before Measurement
Aristotle's advice works by bias correction. It does not tell everyone to move toward the same extreme. A person disposed to rashness needs restraint; a person disposed to fear may need deliberate exposure to risk. The practical recommendation is indexed to the agent's deformation.
That makes the mean unlike compromise. If one party proposes cruelty and another mercy, the virtuous response is not halfway between them. Nor is mediocrity a mean between excellence and failure. The relevant excess and deficiency are defined by the field of action, the circumstances, the people involved, and the reasons for acting.
Calling the mean “relative to us” does not make it whatever feels comfortable. Feeling is part of the evidence and part of the problem. The well-formed agent takes pleasure and pain in the right objects, but someone in formation cannot simply use present pleasure as the measure of what is right.
What a Fourfold Audit Can Do
SAE approaches indeterminate cases through a different instrument. Its fourfold form asks whether a distinction leaves something uncollected on the included side, misplaces an item across the boundary, permits dual belonging under different conditions, or fails to govern the case at all. The value of the form is bookkeeping. It prevents “either/or” from silently deciding what the criterion has not earned.
Consider a parent deciding whether help has become control. The action may genuinely support the child and still occupy space the child needs. It may be help in one respect and intrusion in another. Or “help versus control” may be the wrong division because the immediate issue is safety. The fourfold form can display these possibilities without forcing them into one scale.
But displaying the branches does not choose among them. SAE can make the address explicit and reveal that “both” is sometimes a legitimate result rather than indecision. The next act still requires judgment. No table tells the parent how much intervention is due tonight.
Aristotle offers more practical orientation. Look for your characteristic error. Distrust the pleasure that makes a judgment easy. Correct directionally. SAE offers more explicit accounting. State the criterion, identify overlap, and record what remains outside it. One helps the agent move; the other helps the agent see what the movement claims.
The Irreducible Last Inch
Ethical systems often promise to eliminate the final inch of judgment. A rule, score, checklist, or optimization function will settle the case if enough inputs are provided. Aristotle's refusal is not anti-rational. It is a claim about the object. Conduct varies with particulars, and a theory should seek the precision its material permits.
The same refusal should discipline SAE. An audit can become another fantasy of exactness if the completion of the form is treated as completion of the case. Each entry is itself a judgment: which address matters, what counts as evidence, whether an overlap is genuine, who has standing to object. The instrument does not stand outside the activity it organizes.
A physician can describe risk ranges and still face a patient whose case falls between established categories. A manager can articulate every tradeoff and still decide whether to make an exception. A friend can understand both sides and still have to speak—or remain silent—at a particular moment.
There is no disgrace in this remainder. Practical wisdom exists because action cannot be reduced to demonstration. The mistake is to hide judgment behind a number or to praise vagueness as wisdom. Aristotle's heuristics are deliberately rough but directional. SAE's form is explicit but non-commanding.
The mean is not a point already marked on a ruler. It is the fitting response perceived by a formed agent in a particular situation. We can correct our bias, expose the branches, and make the account answerable. Then the last step remains what it was before the tools arrived: a judgment for which someone must take responsibility.
