Why the Subject Cannot Finish Its Own Portrait

Han Qin (秦汉)

Putting Oneself on the Table

Human beings can make themselves objects. We revisit a decision, analyze a habit, and write sentences beginning “I am the kind of person who…” Reflexivity makes self-knowledge possible. Once the work begins, however, the subject differs from an ordinary object.

A stone does not learn a method of self-measurement by being measured. A subject can. The “I” placed under examination is the object selected at the beginning of the operation. The “I” who reads the result, accepts or contests it, and decides what to do next has passed through that operation. The product preserves a portrait of the subject, while the subject completing the product has already moved beyond the portrait.

The claim that a subject cannot take itself in completely does not posit a secret inner entity. It names a structural feature: the performer can become an object, but the performance changes the performer's address. When a self-portrait is finished, the painter has one more act in her history.

The Gap Between Agent and Product

Self-knowledge is often imagined as increasing resolution. We add information today, correct the image tomorrow, and eventually hope to produce a complete model. But if knowing is itself an action, new information does not merely fill the picture. It joins the history of the person depicted.

A diary makes the gap visible. Yesterday's writer records an explanation. Today's reader may discover an evasion in it, accept it, or be changed by seeing it. The earlier text need not become false. It can remain an accurate construct of what was then available. What it loses is the credential to represent the whole person.

SAE uses the thing-in-itself here as a limit-name: the name for what every construct of “me” fails to take in. The limit is indexed to an object rather than a shared darkness hidden behind all things. In the case of a subject, the limit is unusually vivid because the object is also continuing the work of demarcation.

An Object That Moves

Ordinary measurement may also disturb what it measures, but the problem of the subject is not merely physical disturbance. The author of a judgment and the object judged can be one unit. A subject can examine the rule used in an earlier examination, withdraw a previous undertaking, and turn an old product into material for new work.

This gives the idea of a final self-description an internal difficulty. If an account were to exhaust every later reflexive act, it would have to include how the subject responds to that very account. Yet once the subject reads the forecast, she may take the forecast itself as an object. Every closure creates another place from which closure can be examined.

This argument proves neither a complete theory of free will nor independence from causal conditions. It supports a narrower limit: no fixed model acquires the status of the subject merely because it fits the subject's past behavior with extraordinary accuracy.

Where Ends Come From

The unexhausted subject also matters for ends. External systems can predict preferences, arrange choices, and recommend the goal most likely to be accepted. A person can inherit ends from habit, tradition, or authority. But the fact that an end entered through these routes does not by itself establish that the person has legislated it as her own.

Self-legislation is not creation from nothing. Language, embodiment, family, institutions, and accident supply the material with which a person works. The distinction is that origin does not substitute for assumption. Where an end came from and whether the subject owns it as an undertaking belong in separate columns.

The First Critique therefore locates the source of ends neither in a mysterious pure interior nor in an external causal inventory. It returns the question to performance. Who can withdraw, revise, and assume this end? Who supplies its warrant? Who remains named when its consequences arrive?

Useful Models Without Impersonation

Psychological tests, behavioral models, medical diagnoses, and AI profiles can identify genuine patterns. To say that they do not exhaust a subject is not to dismiss them. A clear jurisdiction makes them more reliable: this model predicts a class of behavior; this diagnosis explains a group of symptoms; this record preserves a period of history.

Trouble begins with credential promotion. Predictive success becomes an essence of personality. A diagnosis becomes the name of a life. Past choices become permission to govern the future. At that point a product falsely claims the subject's place. “A valid construct about you” becomes “what you are.”

The noumenal limit of the subject blocks that promotion. It does not declare every decision correct. It requires every construct of a person to retain its address: a product of one operation, not the conclusion of the performer. A person can be known and can know herself. Precisely because she can take up that knowledge and act again, no self-portrait may announce that the brush has finally been laid down.
